Greetings all. First off I'm not complaining here as I received this coin as a gift. Second, I know when getting graded coins one is always supposed to buy the coin and not the holder and in this case I am questioning the coin grading. ICCS MS-63 and yet the coin has at least four large scratches and/or dings on the obverse. Sorry my photo does not show the marks as I see them in hand. I know bag marks can still be on an MS coin yet this seems a bit much. Certainly if I were to purchase an MS-63 and pay the extra for it's perceived value I'd certainly want something that looks better than this. BW - the reverse is in much better shape - only one little ding which I count as acceptable If this is indeed MS-63 then I have a good number of halves and dollars that are in better shape than I gave them credit for. Thoughts?

Two are nicks, 2 are scratches. Not a fan of ICCS, but I think this is within tolerance for 63.

In my opinion, based on your photo, that obverse seems pretty banged up for an MS-63 grade.

Remember you are dealing with ICCS here, not a five-star grading company.

Those aren't scratches. Those are called "contact marks" or "bag marks", meaning hits from other coins.
MS63 looks like the correct grade. MS60 is quite "baggy", while MS64 and up will have very few if any marks.

It looks like a normal ms63 to me.

Hmmm . . . I'm relatively new to having this type of coin in a graded plastic flip. My expectations for MS-63 must be off. Again, I was gifted this so no complaints as a gift however I'd really think twice before paying a premium for a coin with so many markings on it. If this really does make MS-63 then I must have a bunch of MS-65's and 66's in my collection.

Thanks for the input to date on this thread. I'll be going through my coins again over time and re-evaluating. I always thought that for a coin to be in MS state it really had to be super clean (aside from the odd bag mark). If indeed the coin I received is an MS-63 then I am fairly sure that the 1963 silver dollar that I pulled out of one of my boxes is MS-65

Could be.
Show us some of your coins you think are ms65 and we'll chime in, as we're glad to help.

Looks like a normal MS-63... the logic is like this: It is not nice enough for an MS-64 and it is better than a MS-62...
There is a good lesson here. Trusting your eyes and eye-appeal matters. Remember that ICCS does not account for eye-appeal, they assigned a "technical grade". The stricter you are with the standards for your own collection, the better it will be...

aghawk, a gift is always nice but, I have to agree, it doesn't look MS-63 to me either.

I'll post images between the holidays. I too would like to know if the coins I have make a "better" grade.

Also, I believe ICCS looks for clean fields more than clean devices. In that coin, there is only one significant contact mark in the fields. The rest are on the devices. Although they look distracting, there's only a few of them. MS63 looks good to me too

I have to agree that this coin is over graded at MS-63.
