The Bank of Montreal ribbon is probably the second hardest to find (Banque du Peuple being the toughest) so I am very pleased to upgrade from my current XF40.

The only spot of concern is a tiny bit of verdigris on the C in provinCe.

Opinions greatly welcomed, and thank you in advance.

Beautiful token. MS-62.

This series is not my area of expertise. I do attribute these according to Dr. Courteau variety, but I have not done a detailed study of this series, save the printed work of Courteau.

Of this series, Dr. Courteau identified ten varieties (14-23 inclusive). Dr. Courteau does not list these into separate groupings. Dr. Courteau identifies two primary reverses dependent upon the completeness of the stem of the upper Shamrock.

The upper Shamrock leaf is disconnected to the main stem on varieties 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, and 22.

The upper Shamrock is joined to the stem on varieties 15, 16, 20, and 23.

Your token is of the 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, or 22 listings.

Dr. Courteau indicates whether the S in BAS and S in SOU are normal or inverted.
Dr. Courteau indicates the placement of the 1st A in CANADA in relationship to the N in the same word.
Dr. Courteau indicates the placement of the I in PROVINCE in relationship to the N in the same word.
Dr. Courteau indicates some die-cracks.

The S in BAS and the S in SOU are perfect on varieties 14.
The S in BAS and the S in SOU are inverted on varieties 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23.
The S in BAS in inverted on varieties 15, 16, 17.
The S in SOU is inverted on variety 18.

The I in PROVINCE is higher than the N on variety 19.
The I in PROVINCE is on-line with the N on variety 20.

Dr. Courteau provides no data of the 1st A in variety 14.
The right-foot of the 1st A in CANADA is on-line with the N, the 2nd A is lower than the D on variety 15.
The right foot of the 1st A in CANADA is higher than the N on varieties 16, 22.
No data is provided of the 1st A on varieties 17, 18.
The right foot of the 1st A in CANADA is on-line with the N on variety 19.
The right foot if the A in BAS is on-line with the Serif of the S in the same word on variety 21.

The VIN in PROVINCE are on-line in variety 23.
The D in DU tilts to the right on variety 23.

This is the gist of Courteau's work. I find much missing.

Your token is Courteau variety 22, to wit:

"22. Obv. Same as No 20, but the right foot of A is higher thanFY that of N. Inverted S in BAS and in SOU. Found in most cases with a die-crack from border touching ground and extending to man's right thigh.
Rev. Same as No. 14. R 1."

FYI, The reverse of Courteau No. 14 is as follows.
"Rev. BANK OF MONTREAL in ribbon-ends. The upper shamrock leaf is disconnected from the sprig main stem."

Enjoy.

Agree......MS62 to ms64 brown, as I see no wear for an AU grade.
