Hey, Why use chemicals to react with the CuS04 and CuC03?

Why not just heat the cent up to 600 degrees C and let them decomposes into Copper oxide and the related gases? It is going to spread out the copper oxide over the coin too though.

I guess you could lose some organic compounds on the coin at those temps, which could change the look.

If you read though this whole post, you'll see I considered that. I'm still going to try it but I suspect the whole patina will be altered....besides, chemistry is a lot more fun for me.

It is still chemistry :) you are just doing a nicer reaction.

heat
CuCO3 ------> Cu0 + C02

I think it would change things somewhat. I am not sure to the degree. I would guess a lot of organic compounds on the coin would reach their melt point before 600 degrees. Their break down could cause reaction not planned for. Plus that CuO might not stay in place exactly either as I think heat makes it expand.

Anyway.... you know more chemistry than me. I am just hoping I can get through organic and MCAT.

My formula 500407 turned out to be quite a success! To validate the test, I repeated it on a second coin. The first test results are here:

I guess the lesson learned is that verdigris tends to cause irreparable damage to the coin as evidenced by the corrosion that lies beneath it.

BadThad, I have really enjoyed following this thread. Well done to you for you persistence and dedication. Looks like you are on a winner with this formula. If you need an Australian distributor, let me know.

Thanks everyone. It's been a lot of work, you've only seen a small piece of the work here.

Independent Testers Needed

I need two people to test my fluid for me. There's just a few requirements:

1) You must have excellent coin photography skills. Able to take some good pictures and close-ups. I need to see an example of your pictures to determine if they are of sufficent quality.

2) Must be able/willing to post the pictures here and email me the high resolution versions.

3) Must be able to follow the product directions I supply and monitor the test to completion, posting your results as the test progresses.

4) Must supply me with a written summary of what you think of the product, positive or negative.

5) Must agree not to send the test product or offer to sell to any other person and not attempt to reverse-engineer the product.

6) Must be in the USA lower 48 states and a member of CC forums with at least 100 posts.

7) Agree to any other provisions/limitations I may decide at a later date. I may also send you a confidentiality agreement to sign.

8) You must be at least 21 years old.

If interested, please send me an email via the forum link. Only two people will be selected for this independent test.

Thanks, Thad

Thad, I am very happy and excited for you! What a joy to watch the "partial" process - knowing you spent much time not posted or shown here. I would love to be an independent tester however your number 1. & 6. requirements knock me out.

It was truly interesting following this thread.
Best of luck!

Thank you, I'm glad to know several of you found a bit of entertainment here.

I'm surprized, but I still have no takers on my offer to independently test for me. Maybe I'll start a new thread?
