So 1997 is the lowest mintage year for the silver maple leaf at just over 100,000. I'm wondering what would the buy price on one of these have been in 1997. So far all I could find was that the silver price was around $6 (US?). What sort of premiums were there on SML's back then?
Thanks

I did a bit of quick research for you. The average price of silver in 1997 was $4.89 U.S./oz. Exchange factor 1.38 so about $6.75/oz. Canadian. I see silver trading at $21.59 CAD Jan. 15/18. You'd have just over tripled your money if you bought in 1997 and sold in 2018. Allowing for the premium (don't know how to figure that), lets us just say your money tripled.

Sounds good but Canada's inflation factor was 145% over those 20 years versus 300% for the silver increase so your buying power would not have tripled. You would have done quite well though.

I assume you picked 1997 because it was a "rare" year. These are not numismatic coins and with 100,000 minted I doubt that today they are worth any more than spot value. Would they be worth any more than a 1996 or 1998? Maybe somebody else can respond to that.

By the way, this post might get better response in the precious metals forum.

Actually I've seen the 97's sell for a lot of money. On ebay sold listings anywhere from $58-70 CDN - so substantially better than spot.

As for premiums - although lower by today's standard they likely did make up a greater % of the final price. e.g. A $$2.00 premium on $6.00 SML still is 33% of the spot price.

aghawk - I see you are right about the ebay sales. I was quite surprised to see that they were going for that high of a price.

@aghawk: I did a little digging and found 1997 dealer ads that offered the ML coins for spot +$1.25/$1.50.

Thanks commems for the info.

Would be nice if premiums were that low now.
