While on the job in St Helena ( in the Napa Valley )my husband John happened To find 1942 Quarter just sitting on the stump Of a tree.
It's has a big glob of pine sap on it but otherwise it is in unbelievable condition.
I can see Strike Doubling on the date but the mint mark I assume is under the gob of pitch.?

If it is a US quarter, the mint mark is on the reverse of the coin.

Hi Coinvirgin a fellow Napa Valley member here! Do you have a way to photograph your coins so you can post them?
Also, tell your hubbie nice score on that quarter

Where is it located? I can't find a mint mark on the back.

Here is an example of a 1932 D. You can see the mint mark on back above the R and below the Tail feathers & branch.

This is the mintmark location on 1942 U.S. quarters:

That pic is of a 1942-D. There could also be an S. If there is no mintmark there, then it is a coin from the Philadelphia mint.

As far as sap, I agree that pure acetone will remove that and not harm the coin.

That is a very interesting place to find a coin. You should keep it as your pocket piece.

with John. Any chance your husband took a photo?

That would be a great story to have a photo with.

I will try the acetone soak as recommended.
no mint mark.
Unfortunately John didn't take a photo when he found the coin.
However I will take a before photo & after acetone bath photo if you like?
I have bathed many things but never a coin ( unless you count the washing machine) ha! Any pointers?

Leave the coin in the pure acetone bath until the stuff is gone. Clean with pure water. Air dry - a hair dryer helps.

We would love to see before and after photos.

If there is a lot of pine sap you will probably have to change the acetone multiple times. As the sap dissolves the acetone eventually becomes "saturated" and the dissolving action stops.
