Hey ya'll! Here is one of my most recent aquisitions. It is a 20 Chon coin, struck in 80 percent fine silver, and was minted in the 9th year of Kwangmu (King Gojong of Joeson).

In Gregorian date, it is 1905. According to Krause's SCWC and Dae Gwang Sa's Illustrated Catalog of Korean coins, it is the scarcest date.

As a historical note, the planchet size of coins minted in the protectorate era, got shrunk after the Russo Japanese War. This coin posted, is the large sized one.

I have a question regarding the market value of these coins. It seems to have a high catalog value according to Krause. It a nicely struck example, IMO.
Catalog: KM 1128
Thank you everyone!

Anthony

nice coin Anthony,

Since the market value can fluctuate, I would say between $50 to $150.

I think XF is a bit of a far stretch. The wear on the dragon's 'frill' right along the head is quite worn. If you look at the reverse crest - the leaf and flower details are not quite there.

Here are my examples

For some reason these silver coins are somewhat underrated despite the low mintage figure at just a million. I believe you can pick one up for under 100 dollars. Here's a thread I made a while back. http://goccf.com/t/120859

Current prices here in Korea for this coin begin around the $100 at VF and $200 at AU. MS62 runs about $450. These are NGC-graded prices. Your coin in its current condition and in its raw state is worth much less than that. I would be stretching to say its worth maybe $50 to $70. Korean coin collectors in Korea will want to send this in to get graded and at that price range/this coin's condition they will make a little profit or come out even. In its raw state, I wouldn't expect a $100 valuation.

Great coin though! Send her in to NGC :)
