Proof Blank Scratch Marks? - Coin Community Forum

4504 Valued Member United States 379 Posts	Posted 01/20/2018 8:38 pm hello all I bought a gold proof coin from the late 50's. at eye level, it looks great on both sides. Yet with a magnifying glass I can see for what appear to be very minor scratches on one side. I spoke to an experienced coin dealer about this (I did not buy this coin from him) and he said it was not unusual for this on proof coins. He said that if the scratches were below the surface of the coin, that this likely means that the coin was cleaned, but if what appeared to be scratches were actually tiny lines that are raised ABOVE the surface of the coin that this was likely due to the polished blank that the coin was made with and no harm/no foul. Do any of you agree or disagree with this or seen it before? Thanks... mike Report this Post to the Staff

I would provide a photo, but the lines are so tiny that I cannot get a picture of them, I would have to take pictures through some sort of magnifying device (which I do not have other than a common magnifying glass). again, thanks for your replies... mike Report this Post to the Staff
