With regard to your '16-D nickel, it looks to me like this coin has some surface discoloration. This can be from environmental exposure, but it is hard to know exactly why it changed to a matte grey color. This isn't a mint error and your coin can be spent safely. If you search CCF with the keywords BLACK BEAUTY, you will find a bunch of prior threads showing that earlier nickels have had a propensity for darker discoloration.
