Yes this is a fascinating thread in that I really don't know how far back we will be able to go. I have one or two more coins to post when we get there, but I'm honestly a little surprised that we have even made it now to the second Century BC by decades.

There is no problem as long we can work with Roman coins , the denarii are well dated . Once we are working with Greek coins , it is impossible to continue with decades . albert

Republic Ar Denarius M Aburius Geminas Quadriga 132BC 18mm 3.74g

I have a few datable Greek coins but at some stage perhaps the criteria may have to be reduced, coins produced for more than a couple of decades by starting date will have to surfice...

Lets cross that hurdle when we come to it. The bulk of my collection is still earlier than our time period and I look forwards to posting them :-)

This, as posted previously in another thread, appears to be my oldest dated coin...

Seleukid Empire, Antiochos VII Euergetes (138-129 BC), AE unit dated 174 SE (139/8 BC).

Don't think I have any earlier coins I could post, unfortunately.

(Some of my Pantikapaion bronzes are sometimes attributed to a single decade - e.g. "220-210 BC" - but I'm not sure where those attributions come from.)

Here is a Roman Republic Denarius that dates to 137 BC. The obv legend is "X TAMPIL" and the rev legend is "ROMA M BAEBI QF". It is attributed as Crawford 236/1d.

This coin is the sort of problem we will run across with the Greeks... attributed as after 146BC isn't particularly satisfying for our purposes...

I think that this one will work for the decade of the 140s BC. Here is a Tet from Amphipolis that I recently picked up. I like the heft of it (16.6 g) and the slight cupping, which really makes it feel like a miniature Macedonian shield. It dates to between 158 and 149 BC and is attributed as GC&V 589 and BMC #4.

Anyone know how long they minted the Thasos tet I posted? To give an after 146BC and not know till when is a little irritating.

Anyway, Spence has cemented the 140's so I will put in a solid 150's in the form of this Atticca Tet.

Here is a Hemidrachm from Elis, in the Achaen League. It dates to between 175 and 168 BC and is attributed as GC&V 1159. I really like the monograms on the rev.

...wait. I'm pretty sure 158-149 BC counts for the 150s BC, not the 140s. The dates go in the wrong direction.

Do we still need to post a coin from the 140s BC?

Well spotted January (BC can be confusing) though I am happy enough to accept the Thasos tet "after 146BC" given I am not sure how long they were minted and it starts within the decade.

We have the same issue with the last coin... we are looking for something within the decade of 160's BC, this ends there rather than begins there so would be great for the 170's but not the 160's.

Is this where we finally hit a bump in the road?
