I also picked up a couple more specimens, including this one from Schenley Distillers Corp. I hadn't heard of this company, but for a few years just after Prohibition was repealed it was the largest liquor company in the country. It was sold to Guinness in the 1980s.

Most specimens in my collection were created by the banknote printing companies, but not all specimens were. Here's an example of one that was probably rubber stamped "SPECIMEN" by the company itself or by a brokerage. Sometimes the issuing company wanted to keep a copy on file and they were not as discreet when they marked up the certificate. But this one has no serial number, so it's the real deal. This specimen is for NYNEX, a spin-off of AT&T that eventually became Verizon. I like that the New York skyline still included the twin towers.

My latest specimen acquisition. I really like the mountain scene -- can anyone identify the peak?

I did a Google Image search which came up with The Wellhorn. This explains my failure, as I was only thinking about North American peaks!

Well, isn't that interesting! I would have expected it to be in the Canadian Rockies, but The Wellhorn is clearly the model and the scene is almost exactly the same. Thanks for digging that up! I would not have guessed the Swiss Alps.

Yeah, neither would I! I wonder if the artist had Swiss heritage and chose to use that image knowing no one at the time would know the difference. After all, it fooled us for a bit!

To add to your amusement, I discovered that the Wellhorn vignette was featured in a booklet that ABNC printed for the Time-Life "Opening of the West" series. Apparently they believed their own misinformation!

Apparently they believed their own misinformation! Oh my! I guess that happens when you "borrow" someone else's artwork or they realized the average person was not going out there to verify it.

I just spent some time on Google Maps browsing images of both the Wellhorn and the Grand Tetons. I can honestly see how someone, perhaps pressed for time, may have mistaken the latter as the subject of the image when selecting it for print.

Getting back to specimens, here's a new one I just received yesterday. I should have a couple to post more tomorrow.
