Start putting up listings on ebay as buy-it-now. Even if you are a little high on price, the longer it's up, the higher the probability it will sell.

Is 160 posts enough to post what you have for sale on CCF..

If so, it would be my first choice, then I would make an appointment with a LCD )Local Coin Dealer and get a estimate.

Before all this the work will be to come up with a value for each item and a package value.

The rule of thumb is:

You put more time and work into selling=a higher price for you

OR

You sell it as a lot to save yourself time and effort=a lower price for you

I've discussed this with a few dealers at one of our many coin shows. They all agreed that if you were anywhere near a coin show, go there and ask around about your situation. Many dealers will gladly either go to you or you go to them with everything and either get an approximate valuation or an offer to buy it all. One dealer I talked to has a coin shop and he buys entire collections all the time. One nice thing about a coin show is usually many dealers to talk to about situations like this.

I'm sure I could get a larger amount if I took them apart and sold the coins separately but I think the time and effort might be too much.

That's the trade off, you want more money, you do more work.

Prepare yourself for a lowball value from most LCS.

That's because THEY have to do all the work, and they have a lot of overhead they have to cover that he doesn't have too. And because a fair amount of the collection will be stuff that they already have plenty of that they already have capital tied up in. That means much longer before they can free up that capital, so they need more markup on it. They can't sell it for over market so the only way to get that extra markup is to buy LOW.

I'd suggest getting several offers if you go the local coin shop route and try a coin show if possible since it raises the level of competition for your items. I've heard of several collectors that have sold through a local auctioneer and have gotten good results but you need to find one that charges reasonable commissions. If you can take great photos and handle all of the transactional details, ebay is going to be the best bang for your buck, although it will take the most effort.

The problem with trying to sell a LARGE collection at a show is the time it takes a dealer to go through it. He is going to be rushed so he will have to just skim checking for keys and then giving a low estimate to protect himself.

So there's no service that aggregates different bidders for a large collection? Not ebay but like a private dealer version of it.
