Catching up with Monday's Vancouver first, followed by today's Gettysburg.

Both beautiful Moxking! I will admit, I'm surprised you have a Vancouver with color though.

In some instances I've only been able to find a coin I really liked, with toning. I don't discriminate for or against toning, and if given a choice on CSC I'd usually choose white simply because they are easier to find for most issues.

Not true with the Vancouver. Every one I saw that was honestly 66 had terribly ugly toning. You found a great one Beefer, but there aren't many out there, as you probably know.

As you can tell, I also didn't give a bless about PCGS or NGC as long as the coin met my own necessity for honest or strong grading, and at least a 7 if not higher on the 10 point eye appeal scale.

Beautiful coins @moxking. I don't have Gettysburg yet but it's high on my list. I really like the reverse design.

I have to admit that apart from set registries (which seem to me like a marketing scheme), I don't understand only looking at coins in one type of holder. Refining my skill at evaluating coins, deciding what I want to collect as a set, and then trying to hold myself to that without just buying something to fill a hole has been what makes collecting fun. Not that I've always been successful ...

Hey Coroner, and all.

Registry sets are most enjoyable for putting together a set that is comparable to the finest assembled. In 90-some % of the time I agree with NGC and PCGS for the technical grade, but find some post numeric eye appeal factor to be lacking in many of those 90+%.

I must admit that I do enjoy registry sets simply because they help me to pick out better grades, often for very little additional cost.

The Spanish Trail comes to mind. Check Heritage sold prices for 65 & 66 and you find almost no difference in price, even though there are many fewer 66 reported.

Some people love roll hunting. I like competitive registry sets in those fields that I really want in TPG, simply for their protection, easy display, and simple resale value.

Registry sets aren't for everyone, just like Ike dollars, Franklin sets, 4 piece Stella sets, or MS 65-69 Morgan's aren't everyone's first choice. To say nothing of ancient, world, bullion, or tokens.

Let everyone enjoy their hobby regardless of the type they select.

Agree with JBuck, well done. It almost looks to me like the obverse would be a 65, but the rev is what kept it at a 64. Nice coin!

As for the registry set discussion, I have both NGC and PCGS sets for the commems, but only because neither allow a mix of TPG companies in to their sets anymore, and I started mine too late. I have a preference for NGC when it comes to the commems, as I feel that overall they grade them a little tighter then NGC. But, as you all have seen, I will welcome any of the top 4.

Bandsdean - I must agree. I would have lost money on a bet on your Gettysburg. I would have bet straight 65 too.

I do find it fun that it came back home from GB. Nice recovery

How did the mintages stack up for the Girl Scouts compared to others from that period.

The reason I ask is I haven't purchased any new commems, but that Breast Cancer Awareness issue seems like one that would be at a low mintage, too.

There are certainly plenty of female collectors, and those that buy everything. But I'm thinking with the vast majority of male collectors that this might not be a huge issue, either.

Of course, BCA has touched so many lives that my guess might be worthless.

Any comments? I'm trying to talk myself in to buying a new comme. I know I shouldn't need poking, but I always see a type I want more when I get close to spending money on a post 1964 coin.

Since I don't collect the UNCs, I don't keep track of them, but here're the lowest mintages on the PRFs. All of the other modern $1 proof commemoratives have mintages over 100,000 (including the WWI for this year unless orders are cancelled).

Since I'm trying to put together a complete set of modern commemorative $1 proofs, I'll pick up a PCGS PR69DCAM BCA $1 at some point.

Since the $5 commemorative is a new type coin at 85% Au content, it seems like either the UNC or PRF is a must have for type collectors. Again, I'll pick up a PCGS PR69DCAM $5 proof to keep my $5 proof commemorative collection complete.

If you're only going to get a single BCA coin, my guess is that the $5 UNC will be the lowest mintage, but may have the highest ultimate collectability, provided no other 85% Au coins are ever minted.

Thanks, BadDog. There are a few I would have guessed and several I would not have imagined being in that top of the list lowest of the list.

I'm really surprised that the Mark Twain and National Park Service is on that list. I would have thought those to be pretty big issues for a lot of people....
