moxking, IMHO the designs of the Mark Twain and National Parks Service $5 commemorative coins were better than the $1 designs. Again IMHO, the design of the $5 Mark Twain coin is one of the best, if not the best, of any modern commemorative coin (I just love that riverboat ) The $1 National Parks Service reverse design was a bit controversial as well. Although the Mint says the reverse Quote: ... design depicts a Latina Folklórico dancer and the NPS logo, representing the multi-faceted cultural experience found in America's national parks. it was (is?) a mystery to many just how a Latina dancer is Quote: ... emblematic of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. as required by the authorization in PL 113-291. In general, it was like a switch was flipped beginning with the 2013 commemoratives. Before 2013 most mintages exceeded 100,000 and beginning with 2013 most mintages are less than 100,000 and were generally decreasing until this year's WWI commemorative which will again exceed 100,000, due mainly to the Mint's medals program. Without the medals to assist it, I expect the BCA proof $1 to revert back to trend and end up with a mintage significantly less than 100,000, but only time will tell

Excellent report, BadDog. Very informative and it does help with my understanding of the modern commemorative issues. I'm wondering if by 2013, with silver and gold ASE in a number of flavors, plus special issues like the gold mercury, standing, and walkers, plus special quarters, plus a number of proof and mint sets, plus platinum, 5 ounce silver monsters, and commemorative issues too - perhaps buyers have had to forget a chunk that they might otherwise have found of interest. Look at what the RCM has done if you want to learn how to kill collecting.

Quote: The Mark Twain and National Parks Service $5 commemorative coins were better than the $1 designs. Along with the Baseball Hall of Fame, those are the only modern golds I own. I thought the riverboat design was great! And the NPS logo looks great on a coin. The latina dancer on the $1? It didn't make sense to me. I've spent a lot of time in National Parks across the West and I've yet to encounter a latin dance performance. Maybe the parks are different back east?

You have a well developed eye for toned commemorative Beefer. Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser ... my favorite sculptor involved in the classic silver series. Issued in two varieties .... I would enjoy viewing someone posting an MS 'with star' example. For those desiring a circulated example ... the 1922 Grant half is readily available in VF - AU range with occasional market appearances in lower circulated grades. My honestly circulated Grant was recently downgraded to this example: 1922 Grant Memorial Half Dollar - PCGS FR02 Enjoy

Quote: It's going to get very expensive in here the next couple of days.... Concur ... even in the circulated grades the upcoming few coins are expensive ... and very rare in the marketplace. There exist some amazingly well worn Hawaiian half dollars ... The PCGS population report has 6 examples at VF30 or lower with the current lowball certified at FR02 .... I speculate these coins are a result of the original release in Hawaii. My circulated example is a bright surfaces ex-pocket pieces. As Beefer correctly states above ... maybe not the prettiest ... but she is mine. 1928 Hawaiian Sesquicentennial Half Dollar - PCGS XF45 Enjoy

Yes, this section has some rather expensive examples. The Hawaii seems to have two very distinct surface types. The much more common (what I have) that appears "frosty" with matte finish, and ones that have much more reflective backgrounds, almost like a proof like. I searched for the proof like look forever, and found a number of them in the MS 62-64 range over a five year search. But I didn't see a one in higher grade. I was also not the only one looking for that difference, as most of those PL (not really, but for the sake of listing) sold for 50-100% more than the same grade with the matte finish. So I was far from the only one looking for them. NOTE that the scratch at the bottom of the obverse is on the holder, not the coin.I finally tripped over one I loved, with the more common matte finish, as follows:

This issue remains the last opening in my early commemorative collection. I have yet to find a coin I like when I have the $ to spend.
