Great info - thanks everyone. If the coin is VG, then I at least have a ball park for understanding the value. I guess I'm just going to take my time and understand this coin properly.

Well I'm a brit actually , simply live in the US and the coin was collected in South Wales. My grandfather was in business and made a habit of chucking any duds and curios into a tin box. So I've got a lot of stuff like trade tokens and bun pennies in there and I'm trying to catalogue and value them.
This one hit me between the eyes though !

Very nice coin,
The Dump is at the very top of my Wish list. Not only is the coin valuable but it has a fantastic story and place in Australian History. Well done.
I wouldn't be keeping it in a tin anymore ;)

The Holey Dollar has had the rim of the hole compressed with the counterstamp, which would make the hole smaller. At the same time, the Dump has been compressed in a collarless press, making it larger. A Dump can't fit inside a Holey Dollar unless they've been clipped. As for finding a "matched pair", it's very, very unlikely. The Dump was ground flat prior to striking, and traces of the original coins are rarely still visible. Add to this the tiny survival rate of both coins (original mintages were 40,000 of each) and it's fairly unlikely that a surviving Dollar will still have its matching Dump.
