Dear comunity members,

I would like to buy a good book on greek coins (archaic to hellenistic). I am looking for something not only giving a list and a value, but giving interesting historical insights and also artistic elements.

I saw that there is a book by C. Kraay, "Archaic and Classic Greek Coins", but unfortunately out of print, and so very expensive.

What else could I buy?

Thanks for your help!

I agree that Sear's GCV is a good one, but would be remiss if I didn't point you to this thread with loads of good information on websites and books on a variety of ancients:

I have bought over the years many catalogues of coinage, specific to country ( Red Book for US coins, Spinks for British, Duggelby for British Notes and US guide to Paper Money, not to forget world coin catalogue and world banknote catalogue.) It seems that not sooner are they bought than they need updating (because the years fly by so quickly and prices change)

I would be wary about buying extremely expensive tomes of ancient coinage which will be unreliable for pricing because the market is always changing, expecially when ancients are so open to interpretation having many variables like centering, strength of strike, test cuts, counter punches, encrustations, mint marks and eye appeal as well as all the other variables like rarity and demand like other coins.

I think if the coin is not too rare looking at the market is a better guide to price than anything else, when you can pull up 10 or more examples on V-Coins it certainly gives a ball park idea of what these things are likely to be changing hands for.

I have a web page on ancient-coin books. Mostly it is on Roman coin books, but the last part of the page is on book on Greek coins.

Also try FORVM at http://www.forumancientcoins.com where you will find lots of resources on all kinds of ancient coins. More specifically go to their Library of Ancient Coinage where you can download for free many Greek classic (aka old) publications.
