This is backed by GOLD, says to the effect of being traded in NYC as a dollar in gold. Could that really be, was America recognizing German banking at this time of the Weimar startup? This is an example of wertbestandiges notgeld. This was a short lived attempt to stabilize the German currency by pegging it to the US dollar at a rate of 4.20 gold marks = $1.00. The introduction of the rentenmark made the gold mark obsolete. |

10 pfennig (1916) issued in Quedlinburg WWI P.O.W camp  5 pfennig (1918) issued in Plauen. A small note, really quite nice though.   |

ETA - jbuck, Camp Quedlinburg housed between 12,000-18,000 p.o.w's during WWI.
The prisoners were used as agricultural labour, the last prisoners to leave were Russian, in 1921 as Quedlinburg continued to be used as a transit camp.
The Camp was then burned to the ground.
Over 700 prisoners are said to be buried in a cemetery near the site.

Some really cool notes being posted here. I recently read a book on Notgeld by Jeffrey Jerome Wing called Paper Money Messages. There are 3 volumes and volume 2 is about Notgeld. It isn't a catalog but talks about various aspects of what Notgeld was and why it was needed (though not in too much detail) and delves a bit into translations of many notes, and talks a lot about the imagery depicted and it's meaning. While not a scholarly read, it was quite entertaining and insightful... I recommend it.

A couple of interesting 50 pfennig notgeld notes I came across today.... The first was issued as "Kriegsgeld" (literally "war money") in 1918 by Neu-Ulm in Bavaria, where there were troops garrisoned at the time.   The next was put out in 1922 by Amt Neustadt (Dosse). One side has an amusing illustration of frogs menacing a heron(?). The frogs don't appear to be coming out ahead in this encounter. The other side depicts Cameroon under German rule, which is poignant since in 1916 the colony had been seized by French and British forces, and never reverted to German control, which also had the effect of thwarting Germany's ambition to take over the Congo from Belgium. @lucky cuss, the last note is a lament over the lost colony.
The 2 lines translate as:
"You robbed us in difficult times
but the day of justice comes"
