I don't have the best camera right now, the only "good" pics I could take were through a loupe, I couldn't take any pictures of just the coin. If needed I'll try to get a better phone. So I found this 1980 d cent and noticed it looked like a d/d but after investigating it looks to me to be a d/s. Any thoughts? Might be a d/d/s
What did the debunked D and S look like: It was debunked when an earlier die state coin was found with out the damage noted on the die that looked like an 'S'.
Description: An apparent S mint mark can be found north of the D mint mark.
Die Markers: Obverse: Die scratch from inside lower right G of GOD NW into the field. Reverse: Die gouge on upper side of slanted bar of N in CENT almost to junction of right vertical bar. Die gouge in field east of center of T in CENT.
I appreciate the feedback, I'll try to get some better pics, it really looks like an S to me but I admit you guys know way more than I do. MrCanada I assume you are saying a d/s is not possible because at this point they only made proofs at the San Francisco Mint?
True proofs are struck then at San Francisco. But how made the dies and added the mint marks. I know the three mints do now, but back then? (don't know)
Before 1978 the mint mark was hand stamped on the die, this was the issue with the '42 Jefferson nickel d over horizontal d. I read an article recently about it.
