Gold Nuggets. Not Sure Where This Goes.

Should one clean a gold nuggets, it's a really nice large piece but has a bit of dirt and/or iron. What would be the best way to clean it be? Thousands of years ago it was shiny in a stream bed. Now it's dusty and dull looking. Nuggets with quartz inclusions and sand imbeds are attractive too.
