Someone probably dumped a bunch of goldplated quarters. The TV coin show people sold thousands of sets of goldplated State Quarters over the years. When people tried to sell their "treasures", they found they were only worth face value. In some cases the people who bought from the from the TV shows dumped them into circulation, in other cases the dealers bought up the pieces at face value, and then rolled them up in quantity and and dumped them at the bank. The treasurer of one of our local clubs received three rolls of the things from the bank.
Is the gold subtle or blatant? I have a couple 2016 I wrapped in stiff cheap paper while traveling, and both have toned a nice subtle gold from the sulphur (or something) in the paper. Seems like a whole roll of them toned that way would be unusual though.
