Over the last decade or so, silver proof sets have seen steadily falling mintage's to the point where we are down to a few hundred thousand minted. Considering that these coins are sealed in holders and made for collectors only, it would seem that even with these low mintage's, it still wouldn't make them that desirable for good future price appreciation. But when I see and hear of people cracking these silver proof coins out and throwing them in with other junk silver, or putting them in rolls without regard to their delicate proof surfaces, or generally cracking them out and mishandling them, it does make me wonder how many of the original mintage will eventually remain in "as issued" condition in the future. Just curious what others think of this scenario, and whether or not you think prices have the potential to increase decently in the future.

I think that there will still be a lot of unbroken sets for many decades into the future.

Looking at selling prices of some of the silver proof sets from the early 90s with mintages of several hundred thousand, they are cheaper than the original selling prices.

As an investment, I would look elsewhere.

There will always be a small percentage of proof sets
broken open for various reasons, but for the most part they
will be available for many many years OGP and not appreciate.

I think that when you look at the prices of the 1999 silver set and the 2012 silver set, anything is possible. To me, those two sets don't deserve the prices they are bringing compared to the potential of the 2015 silver set in particular. The 2015 silver dime and half are the best coins of the whole set.

Yeah, the 1999 set price is standing in my way a bit for completion of my 50 States silver proof quarter album. I am hesitant to purchase even just the quarters (about $60) for fear that this is a random bubble.

I don't see a reason why 1999 is worth the price and maybe it will go back down. It's not the only year I need, so it's not an immediate concern as long as it doesn't go up!

I don't know. I think Crazyb0 just cracked about half of what was left.

That is the area where the sleeper coins are, but may take decades to realize.
Collect them for your grandkids.

They are always worth consideration, but it may take a very long time to tell.

Probably an accurate statement.

Probably the right decision.

Yes I think they are, but I think you're looking at the wrong coins.

I like the silver ones because they will always retain some value.

I also like the low mintages b/c my grandkids may benefit from them someday.

I also like to go with low mintage silver for the same reason. I'm hoping my own kids can benefit from them someday.

I sent you a private message because I don't wanna reveal my secret here openly. Why encourage competition when I don't have them all yet.

Well I tried to send a private message but you've chosen not to receive any. If you want an answer, send me a private message.

I use proof coins for my Albums. I don't worry about value since I don't sell coins so any of their values mean little.
