Not as flashy as my recent acquisitions, but Maximus is one of those imperial figures who qualifies for a hole filler coin, and this will do nicely until a "BUY ME" denarius of his comes up. This was about $45 shipped.

Maximus, son of Maximinus I Thrax
Caesar 235-238
AE Sestertius
MAXIMUS CAES GERM, bare-headed draped bust right
PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS SC, Maximus standing left, holding baton and transverse spear, two standards behind.
RIC 13

Little-Guy,-Big-Coin---Maximus-Caesar-Sestertius

Sadly, it appears that most of this fellow's life was lost to history. He was appointed as Caesar perhaps immediately after his father's nomination to the purple, and accompanied his father on his various military campaigns, first against the Goths, then against the allies of the Senate. He died alongside his father after the failed siege of Aquileia in 238. He appears to have been a teenager or in his mid-20s.

Maximus Caesar was murdered together with his father Maximinus I during the ill-fated siege of Aquileia in AD 238, the Year of Six Emperors. The emperor Maximinus is said to have been a true giant. According to the Historia Augusta, he stood 8 feet 6 inches tall. The exaggerated features on his coin portraits suggest he may indeed have suffered from acromegaly (gigantism). His custom was to eat an an enormous mid-day meal, as any giant would do, and nap afterward through the afternoon. The assassins struck while father and son were sleeping in their tents. Their heads were placed on poles and carried back to Rome by a detachment of cavalry. The moral of the story? A light lunch is good for you in more ways than one!
