I found a UFO coin at my local Post Office this morning and got a nice low serial number as well! Really cool coin in-hand, I can see why these are going up in price so rapidly.

the Falcon Lake coin must be setting some sort of record for a 1 oz silver coin. its already selling at 499.00 and now a second seller is trying for over 2k obo..which is a gold coin price......Im feeling pretty lucky that I snagged 3 units last minute at release price or slightly better...I think most of these sales are presales so it will be very interesting to see what happens to the prices when the coins start showing up in hand....I dont think people realize that there is a ufo mania sweeping the world these days. Coins like Star trek and star wars are just science fiction kind of like Superman but this coin is based on a sighting that was thoroughly investigated by the govt of Canada and USA. First coin of its kind. I sent wario a question about whether he had them in hand but no reply as yet...im betting its a presale as well. I could be wrong ..ha ha

I have to admit to being thoroughly confused with this "coin", much as I was the Pysanka a few years ago.

When I saw the coin listed on the Masters Club, I gave it a pass; it didn't work for me, nor did the Pysanka.

The RCM has been doing the GITD thing for a few years now and there are number of nice examples, the Moonlight series comes to mind, the UFO though is not the best example IMHO. Whether GITD or egg shapes ( or glass beads or gates) qualifies the item as a coin is a second argument that while prevalent, I won't enter into here.

I do wonder how much of the traffic in this thread is related to how much folks actually like the aesthetic of the piece, how much is tied to a UFO based interest/ collection focus and how much is the desire to see a NCLT purchase actually appreciate in value for a change.

I will be surprised if this coin retains its multiples over initial sale for the long term. The four year journey of the 2014 Gold Superman shield coin has seen it climb to a 50% premium over issue price then decline to the point where it is now available for initial issue price, I expect it to decline to melt value within the next 10 years. the 2011 Ladybird coin jumped by 10x over issue but is now firmly in decline, albeit still 6x issue. Given the lack of intrinsic value in RCM proof silver vs. issue price, all that there is to retain value or cause appreciation is aesthetic, subject matter interest and low mintage. At 4,000 units, low mintage is not a factor... My prediction, if you missed out on this right now, you will be able to pick this coin up with the 2016 Pysanka at issue price or lower within the next 5 - 10 years.

Over the last 20 years, there have been hundreds of NCLT issues from the RCM (just look at the thickness of Charlton Vol 2). There are however less than a dozen of these where the mintage is 4,000+ where the market price has retained a 3x or higher multiple over issue price over a five to ten year period. Even th once much desired Avro Lancaster $20 coin from the '90s is selling for below issue price.

BTW, I am excluding the gold coins from the early 2000's where the market value is carried by the melt value which is now approaching 2x issue; $100 gold coins from the '70s and early '80s are well up on the issue price but again, they are selling at melt with minimal if any premium.

In my humble opinion....a comparison between 2013 gold superman would be more accurate in predicting the future value trend of this coin..2013 gold superman has had its ups and downs over the 5 years but you cannot find one on ebay for less than 2000.00 right now. it has sold for 2k on Best offer recently and has been snapped up for 1300- 1500 on a BIN listing..As the word gets out into the uFO community about this coin it will go on increasing..it could hit 1000.00 for sure..The interest will always be split between aesthetic and speculation but for a die hard UFO enthusiast no price will be too high for this coin...

My direct and humble opinion:

I don't like the coin. Neither design nor the topic. But will respect the other's opinion.
But I like the hype, and like the fact that suddenly NCLT part of the forum became alive (same happened with other forum), and I will like the fact that some of the RCM coins appreciated.

As per my experience with small collectibles - the item is very hot, when it hasn't reached masses yet. When "in hands", the hype goes down, the item might stay popular or its reselling value will settle near issue / retail.

See Cassidy, you are UFO-fan, looking on the topic from "inside of the group", and as you correctly noticed, people don't realized and not aware about any UFO-mania. I am "the people", and looks like UFO-mania ended in the 90-'s.

Added:
just looked 'sold' listings on the ebay, and I excited:
CAD 375, CAD 499, CAD 370 with free shipping. That's nice.

I not disagree, Cassidy

Coins - selected topics, when they are fresh - always popular.

UFO-mania on YouTube? Never saw this.
For me Youtube full videos with 'Ryan Toys Review' (cause this junk my kids watch), Alien movies explained and StarCraft related (cause this junk I watch), and nothing about UFO

@silveroid...I get it..little kids like larva ufo and little heroes to the rescue ufo on you tube......ha ha.... but adults can get incredible first hand documentaries on Canadian sightings like Edwin Fuhr in 1979 ..a simple Canadian farmer who tells an unbelievable story which was virtually unknown before you tube..that one would make a great coin as well but he didnt get zapped by a ray like the Falcon Lake guy which is more dramatic.... and I can see why they chose that one for the coin......ufos are quite scary which is why the govts have censored the info in the past.

I'm not going to lie, I was not thrilled with the look of the coin online. However, in person - completely different. The GITD effect is absolutely perfect and brings the coin to life. I purchased two of these and will be holding onto them. The shape of the coin is a bit odd but it actually works given the image.

I typically collect classic coins but these were a fantastic addition to my collection. Not sure where the pricing will take it but I suspect this one will hold its value. This coin has definitely hit the collections of persons not really interested in NCLT. The guy at Canada Post told me that as soon as CBC released a story about the coin, they sold out immediately.

Based on my observations of the Falcon Lake frenzy and a few milder ones earlier, I concluded the success formula for RCM to create another mania coin:

The coin must feature a new theme of a Canadian event or figure that is followed by a global community of enthusiasts.

So a Justin Bieber coin would sell as well.

@YesOrNo ...good joke ... I hope.....Who knows what goes on in the minds of the RCM producers? So far they seem to excel in nature designs and they are arguably the best in the world at that..Im sure if you pitched Bieber to the Niue designers they would go for it..ha ha....Falcon Lake is a bit unusual in that it combines a human in distress in a beautiful nature scene au Canadienne with techno GITD effects...brilliant.....who wouldve thought of ukranian easter eggs for a coin? not me....maybe this is a preview of a larger govt. program to actually come out and disclose that the ufo is a real issue for us here on the only inhabited planet in the galaxy.sic.

The RCM's UFO coin - one of the first in the topic.
I remember only 2 coins for the same.

But the Pysanka (the egg) not new at all.
I think for several years before Pyasanka, the Faberge Egg series exists for Niue or Palau.

Anyway, good for UFO coin and enthusiasts, that it became valuable. Let's see for a bit longer period, how it will go.
Two Loons scenario, or Pysanka scenario....

I would say: if you have a budget (only!!) load for Cad 720 and sell for 1000. Easy money. Some local update from the Center of The World: I wisited close but not my local CP in the Midtown, and the owner said that he had 3 coins: one sold to ocasional person, and other 2 grabbed "knowledgeable" customer, who even left the cash deposit, asking the owner to keep for him coin, if more will arrive. This heppened day ago, means, that some POs still have the coins.

More this will raise, more chances RCM will mint the second one with increased mintage and it will be valued like BumbleBee compares Lady Bug.

Yesterday in the "UFO-ish" mood , cause I accept all this as a tales, and Sci Fi style Blade Runner as more possible stuff, re-watched 'Invasion' movie (recent and not bad remake of 'Bodies Snatchers').
