It is good to see a lot of traffic on the NCLT forum page... Unfortunately it is only on this one coin.

Is that only we are loading this coin and it mostly interesting non-coin collectors and resellers?

I wonder, most initial comments on this coin when the April release was announced were somewhat negative, I tend to concur with @silveroid that the current attention is due to non-collectors buying in due to media exposure and resellers/speculators jumping at a chance to cash in.

I disagree with the sentiment that you have lost money if you didn't buy in earlier... At best, you have lost opportunity but that only counts if you are a reseller or speculator. As a coin collector, where you purchase coins for your own hobby/pleasure, you should only buy a coin if it fits with your preferences/collection. Many of us don't resell or only do so to fund the evolution of the collection.

Not sure I agree with the connection to the 2013 gold Superman; it is still only 2.5-3x issue price. Superman, like a few of the silver dollars appears to have a sustained value with lower multiples ( 2005 Enamel Flag or 2002 Queen Mother). This may be closer to the 2011 Murano Glass ladybird which did rocket to 8.5x issue price ($1,200). However, in the last year, I have seen this coin drop back to $700 which is still 5x issue but the trend is clear and matches most Canadian NCLT once the frenzy dies down. Remember the unobtainable 1990 Lancaster coin... whose appeal was also driven by non-collectors. It is now available below issue price at only 1.8x melt.

I don't like the design of this coin (egg shape and pop art image) nor am I particularly interested in the subject matter so the decision to give it a pass was an easy one for me and because I am not a reseller/speculator I don't regret that decision. Personally, from the April release, the coin I like most is the Angel of Victory... I find it stunning... however, my budget won't stretch to that so I am waiting for a 1oz release of this image or a 5-10 year wait until I can pick it up at closer to melt value.

Good luck to those of you who bought in... Just remember to sell the ones you don't want to end up holding soon as the frenzy will fade almost as quickly as it arrived. The coin will only ever be worth an ounce of silver... any additional value is purely in the eye of the purchaser.
Rest in Peace

So, with these high prices, (come on, $999 Cdn - Really?) I'm thinking I should flip mine (when it arrives) ASAP... then, wait until the 2nd wave of them are delivered, (June 4th) and the prices plummet again so that I'll pick one up for the reduced price due to everybody jumping on the bandwagon - thus joining the scalper/flipper community in addition to the collectors.

Edited to add... Mine did arrive as stated - today the 9th. They really aren't a 'terrific' looking coin, and my UV light didn't work - so I'll have to wait to see that effect.

Here it is.

@ vonigohcr....thats like saying paintings are only worth their weight in paint!...ha ha ....some of them are I might add!...The Falcon lake coin is kind of a newer phenom in nclt...its an event coin..but not a war or a royal visitation or exposition ....anyways ..its bidding in the 600s now on multiple items so I think its safe to say a lot of the 4000 FL coins will end up in permanent collection. Once I offered to sell the Dr Who gold coin to an american dealer and he wouldnt give me more than bullion value.....I get it..its a remorseless world out there in bullion land...

Well, the parallel with the first Superman coin, these mine thoughts only. But again I do not speak about the numbers. But sudden rise up, going under radar of the collectors and experienced re-sellers.
Why not comparing with Lady Bug? Cause then, in the 2011, any novelty, specially limited addition could go very well. Unlike 2013 and later.

This coin just amazes me along with the thoughts of some collectors, you have a coin that really is about an obscure incident that most Canadians have never heard of until a week ago, If you have more than one what are you waiting for 2000.00, there is 4000 mintage, cash in while you can, in the hobby a really highest graded 70 to 100 year old graded coins barely sell for 1000 bucks excluding key dates. Common sense will eventually hit the market, take 2005P non mag penny or the other way, the first two auctioned through TCNC went for over 20,000 and now it barely sells for2000, and there isn't 4000 of these units. Really nice Canadian coins barely reach a 1000 bucks, good luck

Agree with John. It is not worth it unless it is a truly obscure rarity, variety, unique error, or a grade rarity.

thats like saying paintings are only worth their weight in paint!

If you are talking about intrinsic value then yes... paintings are worth the cost of the canvas and the paint... actually slightly less if you consider them used. All coins carry value from three sources, 1) the intrinsic or melt value, 2) the denomination honoured by the government in trade for goods & services and finally, 3) a floating value that is dependent on what someone is prepared to pay for the coin. It is in this latter realm that all NCLT lives until it declines to melt value. To extend the metaphor, a canvas painted on by my daughter when she was 2 would be lucky to command the cost of carrying it to recycling; were that same canvas painted by Claude Monet the cost would be significantly higher. Monet's work has endured for a century now and there is no reason to believe it will decline in the future; the same cannot be said of NCLT which as a collectible form is only really 50 years old (at least in Canada with the 1967 issues then the Montreal Olympics)

As to the inspiration for NCLT,

Quote:

The Falcon lake coin is kind of a newer phenom in nclt...its an event coin..but not a war or a royal visitation or exposition

There have been many Canadian issues for events that are near and far to the hearts of Canadians that don't involve royalty or exposition... I am assuming you want to also exclude wildlife, geography, Olympics etc. but non royal/government historical events are ok:
- $100 Gold - 1993 - Automobiles, 1996 - Klondike gold find, 2006 - longest Hockey game, 2008 - descending the Fraser River
- Canada in Space: - 2017 $25,2006 $30 Canada Arm, 2016 $20 Glass Observatory set.

etc. etc. There are many wide and varied topics represented on Canada's NCLT.

I am happy that the Falcon Lake coin has interested you in both numismatic aesthetic and subject matter. I just don't believe that it is a game changer. It is at best a momentary aberration that as with all NCLT will entropically decline to melt value in time. The variable is the time it will take. Of course you could luck out and see the melt value rise significantly as happened with the $40 specimen set issued in 1967 that contained a $20 half ounce gold coin.. today that is selling for a small premium (10-15%) over melt or $850-$900... It could happen... Otherwise, enjoy the coins you have personally and move any doubles on quickly in order to benefit from the current frenzy.

@ vonigohcr....great discussion ...its difficult to pin down what drives interest in a particular coin...I find most of the nclt overwhelming when you consider that every mint is coming out with new product every month.and then there are the art mints popping up everywhere.......maybe we can only be super hyped about a new coin every couple of years!...Of the 5 big UFO themed coins out now the Falcon Lake coin is getting the best prices and the most interest despite being several times the mintage of the Niue Roswell coin and the Burkina Faso 2 ufo coins of 2017... battle of america coin with another Roswell commemorative.........the Cameroon Roswell commemorative coin......I started a new thread about the Roswell coin and it hasnt had a single reply except for myself!! ha ha ... I think the black light effect is probably the real attractive element in the FL coin but I like both sides of the reverse and the QE cam as well as the upside down egg shape which is rather like the alien face shape..Now I'm going to talk about the invariable replica issue which will arise.....As we all know the Chinese are probably replicating this coin as we type. However it may take a bit longer than usual due to the black lighting feature. It may take them a few months to sort it out.....They are already replicating and taking orders for the Niue UFO 2017 coin..RCM is getting better at security features on bullion coins.

Someone, here or on the other forum, also mentioned UFO-modified SMLs and ASEs.
The SML UFO coin is allready here, and looks like also got some interest

I've raised on H.R.Giger creations..for me the "alien face" it will be the xenomorph's head (the classic one)

Enhancement was done by a private mint in Germany...This is strictly not a RCM product..I wonder if they need a license to produce these coins.....They look cool but I am not interested in modified coins.

dcadon. I'm not trying to be a smart butt but open the battery compartment and make sure the plastic is removed so the battery can make contact with the flashlight. I know it's simple but it's a common mistake made by my customers.

Thanks Gatewest...you said it, you are....LOL... Yes, I removed the plastic - I even looked deeper, under the battery holder to see if there was another one deep inside... nope. I double checked the polarity, and still nothing. Light is DOA. Butt thanks. :) (then again, I didn't actually check the batteries themselves)

Great find, Yingyang

Was it the same "golden" PO, with some stock of the Baby (or Wedding?) sets years ago?
