This was what I was referring to. Sorry for the confusion. A cleaned coin is far better than a damaged one.....

I will have to admitt. That my favorite commemorative is the 1982 George Washington Bicentennial as designed by Elizabeth Jones. If I recall it was the first coin designed soley by a woman. As a note I prefer the uncirculated version over the proof version. It's much rarer.

Hi Catman, via a vis your above comments (and vaildating NDs observations) at least one dealer is charging more for the 82 GW commem in Uncirc than proof http://www.wscoin.com/ItemList.cfm?...&FirstRow=21Don

SKDukie Dealers I think sometimes charges more for that coin because if they bought it in 82 the mint have paid more than the list price right now. I was lucky and found my proof 82 Comm at a flee market for $5 each...there were 3-4 and I took all of them! Speedy

I personally believe that both of these coins should bring more money. First, they are the first new commems, and secondly they are a great design. The mint did not push this issue in the beginning, and they still suffer today because of it. An undervalued coin in my opinion.

I think both of the Comm. are cheaper than they should be...the 1892 Comm. and the 1982 Comm. are cheap even in higher grades.

Welcome to the forum SFDukie. Gaining insight on a particular commemorative issue is a bit tougher than regular issue coins. There are a few decent books on the series, but most lack detailed information.
http://www.stantonbooks.com/books_commems.htm http://www.coingrading.com/grade1.html
Maybe one of these will help. If you would like some info on a specfic series, please ask. I have quite a large referrence library.
Hi ND, Read the bowers hodder basci guide to commems. Looking for info in book form which tells about grading, strike, pops for indivual classic commems- what book should I get next? And in thinking about my commem type series, I've been thinking about strategy- should I get the keys hawaii, Spanish trail etc first? Or should I hold off as I'm sure I'll have a better eye and be more savvy in the future? Should I just keep my eye out for good examples of any, or should one or a few and pick em off one at a time? Any and all FB appreciated... Don
