Hi, could someone please help me and explain the difference of worth of the Beatrix Potter 50ps. Some are being auctioned for £1000's yet you can also buy some for a few pounds. What's the difference in the coin that makes it higher in value?!

Thanks in advance!!

Hello

I think it depends on a few things like:

1.How many were minted
2.Is it silver proof which can bump up the price
3. The piedfort ones can be expensive, but not £1000 expensive. I'm not sure though if they had piedfort versions.

You also have to remember that people will put their hands into their pockets and see an odd 50p and just assume their worth thousands, and they will hope some poor old soul will be gullible enough to fall for it. The only 50p I know that's worth a decent amount of money is the Kew gardens one which many are hunting for in circulation. You also have error coins, and the mint will sometimes admit or validate an error coin. But I'll be honest, the mintage and rarity is the biggest factor to me personally. They tend to make many millions of these for circulation. Do you know what Beatrix Potter design it actually is? You got a link?

cheers

To add to the above - I don't believe any Beatrix 50p is worth anything like £1000 unless there is a gold proof version.
General tip: On ebay, once you have searched for the coin, click on the "Sold Listings" button down the left hand side. This will reveal actual completed sales and will often reveal how unrealistic some Buy it Now offers actually are. Sellers can ask what they like for a coin - the test is what they actually sell for - a lesson our newspaper journalists would do well to learn.
I see most of the Beatrix issues selling for a few pounds unless they are Silver proof, or the coloured version, or mint in packet. Even then the most would seem to be under £100.
Don't fall for the seller's hype!

Thank you both!

I have a Peter rabbit, half whisker (not colour) from 2016 and couldn't understand the conflicting values.

Might be the collection of Beatrix Potter coins, or maybe be the BU frosted silver proof.
