I'm beginning to work through my current Morgan holdings with the QX-5, to see what I may have which I didn't know I had yesterday. It's as fun as metal detecting, without the dirt. :)

I'm playing with light levels, external lighting and filters, as the direct light is mounted on an angle and too bright for some details. Here's a little of what I found:

An 1878-S VAM 15:

Bulged P? Check.

Slightly-doubled LIBERTY? Check.

Doubled 7 not mentioned in the VAM description? Check.

A couple interesting things from my avatar coin, an 1879-S:

Polishing lines. I've found amazing numbers of polishing lines in my coins.

It's an S/S of some sort, but doesn't quite match any available pics.

A couple others:

Mintmark on an 1880-O. Ever seen one like this?

An interesting structure in an 1888-O.

A closer view - the line is definitely raised.

An 1889-P, just like the VAM 36 spike, but it's in the wrong 8. :)

1898-P VAM 2 right shoulder die gouges. Except, contrary to the pic at Ashmore, the left shoulder looks like this:

This almost looks like a clash.

I'd say I'm having too much darn fun with this microscope, but that ain't possible. :)

Amazing what you can see under the scope. A 40 power loupe is scary enough for me! Those polish marks show up with the 40 as well! Great pictures. Mike

Dipping, which is obviously not recommended, will work. Toning is silver sulfide, formed by the reaction of silver to sulfur in one form or another. It's apparently possible to make the sulfide part of silver sulfide go away, leaving only silver left, by attracting it to something even more welcoming to it:

I'm going to give this a shot with a throwaway coin sometime soon, and report back.

Your 1879 s/s is interesting. I have one that I couldn't match with the VAM book either.

Very nice pics. I see that you are getting a little better with the lighting also.

Here is a very cool die gouge within the letter "G" on an 1884-S Morgan

ND, I'm going to end up fabricating a little diffuser to go over the light. So far I'm unable to turn the mic's onboard light up more than 50%, so diffusing it should enable me to get daylight-clear pics.
