What is happening below the liberty and near the rim? Is that lamination?

Could be a lam, but also kinda looks like it has been struck through a little flake of copper. I'll be interested to hear what others think on this one.

Struck through copper debris like you thought. Is the edge missing metal there? If might be that it rolled across the rim area from there?

That's struck through debris. The L is PMD.

Thanks for the input!! Good point, it does seem to fold from the rim and didn't even notice the "L".

I agree with everybody that it was Struck Through Copper debris. It's a nice one too. Very nice find!

It's definitely something you want to keep. I would put it in a 2x2 coin flip and label it "1947 S LWC Struck Through Copper Debris".
