Here is a nifty one pulled from deep in the archives. The nice high XF graded 1884-S Morgan. First an overall view: Now notice the tooling marks around the mintmark. And closer yet: This little microscope has saved me many thousands of dollars over the years, and it is the cool little things like this that make the value so easily justified.

Just for my own information ND, was the "S" tooled up from the blank field of a Philly Morgan, or is it from a reworked O or CC?
Guess I should say from a reworked O, since the value of a CC is more than an S in XF!

This sure proves your point, doesn't it? Nice instruments to have around and they pay for themselves if your dealing in very many high end coins.

If someone does not mind my asking, what does a decent scope cost with the needed accessories? I'm fascinated! Mike

Yes, I was going to ask the same question. What type of scope is yours, and approximate price. Is this one of those German optical instruments like your hand lens ND? Also, I was just going to say, that even though you can see the tooling under magnification, the skill of some people is amazing. Probably a professional jeweler did this?

Since I already have a thread full of pics elsewhere, I'll just drop one into this thread to give you an idea of what my under-$100 QX5 is capable of. Die polishing lines on a 1979-S Morgan: That's at 60x, with 200x available, and I haven't even properly learned to illuminate the subject yet.

I have a QX3, looks like the QX5 has a little better resolution. I have lighting problems w/ the QX3 as well as focusing. It doesn't "fine focus" very well. Just a touch and you've went too far. But for the money, it ain't too bad. Have been considering a stereo mic with camera capabilities though.

I've got to buy one of those! Nat Dealer that is totally assume! I've ordered a stronger glass, but it only 20X, presently I'm using this 10X from the PX. No wonder I have headaches by the end of the day..

I personally use the MP-600T (7X + 45X Trinocular Halogen/ Halogen) with a current price tag of $759. Can be found here: http://coinoptics.com/order/cat4.htmlI do not recommend that everyone rush out and buy a microscope. However, with the numbers of altered and counterfeits rising, it should be a consideration. I am a firm believer in the following: 65% coins 20% reference 15% supplies So if you have $5000 or more in coins, a microscope is well within the budget. The first time it saves you money, you will indeed agree that it is a tool that should be owned. I have not used the QX series, so I cannot comment on those one way or the other.

OK all you microscope and stereoscope users. I have used a QX 3 & I know it hooks up to the computer so I can get pictures that way.. How do you get your pictures off of a microscope/stereoscope?

I simply download the pics directly from my camera. The better models all have the ability to attach your camera

Well, I'll add a data point soon. I'm a horrible coin photographer and don't have a setup for it. I just ordered a QX5 for $79 with no tax or shipping. I'll play with it when I receive it and post some results, perhaps.
