If anyone has experience with attributing- do you have a rough idea on the newcomb variety of this braided hair cent? Thanks for any/all help!

This is not a trivial request since there is almost 40 varieties of 1847.
I'll take a look but ....

Thanks Kanga. Is there a particular book or reference site that can be used?

Standard references United States large cents 1840 to 1857 my Grellman. Unfortunately the book is not easy to get a hold of and it takes a fair amount of practice using it to be any good at. At least the coin you have is in high enough condition to make attribution possible. Attributing late dates from pictures oh is rather difficult and in many cases impossible. Attribution often depends on tiny little points faint die lines which just do not reproduce well in photographs even quality close-ups of the proper area.

sure thing. Those #s are all lumped together in Grellman book. You can still buy the book directly from him. I think large cents.com has the info.

Last I knew Grellman is sold out of the third edition. At least that is what his ad in the last two issues of Penny-Wise have said.
