Well thanks a lot to all you jerks that told me it was MD!! Nah, I'm playing!! I knew what it was, I had already matched it on CC. That die crack made it pretty easy. Thanks Coop, believe it or not I told my gf that you would come along and post some comp pics and you absolutely did, so I appreciate the "dint I tellya?!" moment. Now, where's Jim? He should get in here too, I think we have the same coin tbh...

Well the lightness on the left side of the images made the DDR reduce in size. But I noted the EPU and the die scratches right off. I just had to piece meal them together. They would have been better if the images were cropped a bit wider than necessary. Why? Because I rotated the coin to make it match the other one, I lost some of the area behind the devices. But I pulled through for you.

Thanks Doug, I was full. Now I'm bloated. Curious, if Ken had 10 of them that were MS65RD, for 10 years, why was he having a hard time getting good pics and still looking for better. And thanks Coop, always appreciated.

Sweet find! Your right coop, those markers are pretty hard to argue with. Especially the big diagonal one running NNW to SSE between the E and S and the end of STATES. Thats hat did it for me, that and obviously the crack at the memorial base. I have a box worth of memorials I'm still mustering up the gumption to tackle. After knocking out the shields I'm hesitant because they just look so dirty now, lol.

The marker I look for is on the O on one. But you couldn't see it because of the extreme lightness on that area. But the die scratches we the biggest clue. Die markers near/inside devices will last a lot longer. Thus when they are out in the open fields, they will flatten faster. This marker can see seen on the example below, but the die state looks fresher. So it may have been on the die for quite a while?

I'm no good at speaking for others, but I'm thinking Ken was asking if anyone seen or had reference of a MS65 or better sale or trade at that time. Also thinking some of those images are of his coin(s) in the post. Thanks, Doug.

Nice. I thought it looked like MD myself until coop showed the proof that it is indeed a DDR. I've been looking for that one myself. Thanks for the images of the markers coop. Thanks to NewMember for posting.

Coop, and others, what do you guys think about that die crack, bottom right corner of the memorial to rim, as a definitive DDR marker for the 002?

The problem with that is that so many dies have a crack in that location. But, the die scratches match the attributed coin on even that area. So it could be used, but the die scratches would also have to match. The bad thing is that is the coin was struck before that crack happened, then it would not be there. I need to look to see if I can find an example of an earlier die state. (I know they are out there, bu probably 3/4 of the coins struck with that die maybe a LDS/VLDS die state. Just have to find the right coin...

Would/could the die scratches change after being polished?

Yes. New ones can be added and in the open field areas, they flatten with time. Thus it is best to look at the scratches closest to a device. They stay longer near devices. Variety Vista has some earlier die state examples of this die. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...3PDDR002.htm

Here's why I ask, Coop... I happened upon a couple more 83's last night.

I was looking at PCGS just now and noticed, they are common that year. So the die crack is not a good marker. But a die crack with the die scratches will save you from having more heart attacks. Look for the doubling. The first place I would look is on the EPU, the the die scratch on the 'O' on ONE.
