I've found a few 39 nickels and have seen there is a 39 with the reverse of a 38 nickel. How do you tell? I think I've also heard about a 40 with a 39 reverse. How do you tell? I do appreciate any advice!

See, instead of having to look up information, look for images, and post all that. I just posted the image. It says all of 10,000 words and more.

One more question. Was there a 39 with a 39 reverse?

Excellent illustrations. Keep in mind that circulated examples may be hard to distinguish without a handy variety reference, like this one.

Just the two types for that year only. The previous and the new one that happened just that year.

Oops... don't forget the proof 1940 was also made with both - see the bottom of my graphic. Check the website referred to on the right side of the graphic for a detailed description.
