Signatures are the easiest way for paper notes.
For example. Coombes/Wilson paper notes, say $1 COA is 1966 issue.
Polymer is usally signatures and the first 2 numbers of the serial numbers for most issues.
Example is for a $10 note, Mcfarlane/Henry AA02 is for 2002.

I used to wonder that too, but yes the first 2 numbers after the letters is the date

2006 would be 06
