Good morning  I have a 2003 $2 Minneapolis uncirculated note with this serial # I 37856241 A. Is this considered a ladder? The digits are not in order? If its a fancy number type, what would the value above face be? Thanks so much for bearing with me, as I learn! |

The note has no rhyme or reasoning to the sequencing of the numbers. For it to be a true ladder it needs to be either 12345678 or 87654321. If it could be called anything I would call it a "randoming ladder". I'm no math wiz but I would imagine that notes like this are not rare and have a very small collector base. That's my Two Cents. Someone else may have a differing opinion. |

As others have said, it's not a true ladder, and not even that rare to have a serial number with no repeating numbers that includes just the numbers from 1 to 8.
There are 8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1=40,320 possible serial numbers like this. With a print run of 99,999,999 (BEP doesn't usually go this high anymore in a run though), that would be .04% or 1 in 2,480 notes. That might seem like a small number of notes, but for comparison, a true ladder note is 1 in 16,666,667 notes (just 6 in a run of 99,999,999).

Thanks All! I totally understand the logic you offered, BadDog and I'll remember it. A straight is cool, Nfine! Thanks for all the input. I think I'll keep it because I really like $2 bills, a straight is cool, and it's cheap to keep.

Nice analysis, BadDog, I vaguely recall learning how to do that in high school about a hundred years ago! Anyway, agree this is not a fancy SN.
