Everyone, I actually know of a major shop in the midwest that actually is the one who sells HSN and the coin vault a lot of their stock. And let me just say, the guy who owns the place is a bit shady himself. This just makes me wonder if there is some sort of HSN/ shady dealer conspiracy.

From what I understand, throughout the year, the Mint changes to a new planchet for every and any particular denomination. They only press so many coins with each one, and then replace it. So yeah, that "First Strike" claim is only evident in the "detailed quality" of the first so many coins minted with that particular planchet. The more minted with that particular one......the less quality detail.
It's exactly the same concept with the "DCam" proof coins right ?....the first so many will give that really high quality........then the regular beautiful proof coins will follow until that planchet is replaced to begin minting more and more until, throughout the year, the mintage limit has been reached.

So, I guess it's the "Get yours now" claims that pronounce "First Strike" as if you can only get these early and soon in the year and that's it. And besides.......THIS NUMBER IS UNKNOWABLE !.....one could only guess at how many produced off of each planchet were the "First Strike" quality.
HSN has done "First Strike" Sacagawea's, ASE's, Quarters, Commemoratives, and God knows what else.......probably everything !...and theirs are certainly "slabbed & certified First Strike".......so ........dunno......i guess if people want to "buy" that....it's fine.
Like Kurt said.....just judge the "actual coin" and you'll be okay I think !
Putting "First Strike" on a slab isn't "inaccurate" so much as it's "misleading" I suppose......
Am I explaining this correctly ?.......

Had to reset this near top of new page....Heh Heh..

eaglefoot- I think that all in all a first strike is not really a major issue since the amount of detail applied is usually based upon the wear on the dies. So certain cons struck when a fresh die is used are of better detail. Ultimately, this means that quality and the presence of detail varies throughout the entire production run of a coin for a given year.

I have to agree with you. It astounds me that people are willing to pay anywhere from 25% to 50% more than what the coin is worth from them. The only exception I could think of is if you just needed one more coin to complete your draped bust set or something like that and were willing to go to crazy lengths to get it.
Rest in Peace

Well misleading as to terminology, yes. The purpose of any TPG (basement slabbers not included) is to establish a grade of a coin that is acceptable throughout the industry. That said, an MS-60 coin submitted to PCGS in the first thirty days of issue could indeed(in theory)be labeled with a first strike designated label, even though the coin would not have the characteristics of a coin struck with fresh dies. I believe that NGC had the right idea by changing their "First Strikes" to "Early Releases" Thus avoiding any mis-interpretation of the industry standard.
