2013-S Proof Taft Presidential Dollar Errors (?)

justanamateur New Member United States 34 Posts	Posted 05/21/2018 3:44 pm After months of researching & sorting, I'm coming back to the coins that I just can't figure out. First up, is a Taft presidential proof (sadly, pulled from a customer wrapped coin roll). There are 2 things baffling me: First is the raised lines on the edge. There are 3, and seem to be evenly spaced apart. I don't have any other proofs to compare to, but this doesn't seem the norm. Second is a shadow of a "M" just to the right of the M in WILLIAM. It's hard to show it in the pics, but it's very clear with the loupe. I'm trying to learn from these, so take it easy on me. :-) My guesses are: collar cracks & maybe a die clash? JimmyD Bedrock of the Community Canada 21659 Posts	Posted 05/21/2018 5:24 pm Can't be a dieclash for two reasons. 1- It would have to line up with the relief somewhere on the reverse. 2. It would be raised. I think what you see is the same discolouring as there is with between the other letters that may look like an "M". Report this Post to the Staff
justanamateur New Member United States 34 Posts	Posted 05/21/2018 5:47 pm Thanks for the responses. Ok, so strike the die clash. It was a weak iffy. However, about the collar cracks. There are 3. I can't find ANYTHING about collar cracks in dollar proofs (which makes me think this is rare). Is this coin worth sending off for grading? On the proof Presidential dollars, the mint uses a 3 part collar to created the lettered edge on the coin as the coin is struck. The lines are where those 3 parts come together. The business strike coins don't have those marks, because the edge lettering is applied after the coin is struck in a separate process. Report this Post to the Staff

I have been saving ALL my change for years, and have quite a few now that are very odd (in addition to some I've figured out). Hopefully some will be something. This one came from a roll my mom got for me, and there were several varieties & errors. I figured this was from someone's collection. But I've never seen a modern proof, so I didn't know.
