Seems that, between my bigger and pricier (and sometimes prettier) acquisitions, I've fallen into the pattern of picking up more of those quirky little drachms from Elymais. They do make for good and enjoyable filler. The more bug-eyed and weirder-looking the better, as far as I'm concerned. The latest batch is below...I expect to pick up some more within the next couple of weeks. Dealers' pics below - some are still en route and, in any case, I've been too busy to photograph lately - I've got a backlog to get to this summer. Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD Van't Haaff type 12.3 (perhaps subtype 1-1B.f) Prince A, late second to early 3rd centuries AD Van't Haaff type 19.1.1-1A Unidentified King, uncertain dates Van't Haaff 21.2 variant [dots(?) above upturned crescent rather than below] Kamnaskires-Orodes, early to mid 2nd century AD Van't Haaff type 12.3.1-1B Orodes II, early to mid 2nd century AD Van't Haaff 13.3.2-1A.d Edited by Kamnaskires 05/27/2018 09:21 am

Those weird little guys are so much fun, especially given the easy prices. Yours are great examples.

Nice additions @bob--my fave is the third one with the king in profile.

Quote: -my fave is the third Thanks, guys. Dave, that one is particularly interesting in that it is an unpublished variant of a van't Haaff type.

I know, right? That is pretty cool.
Just for my own knowledge though, are the dots and crescent on the obv in front of the king or in that fuzzy caterpillar thing on the rev? Normally, I look for the anchor, crescent, and dots on the obv but everything is mostly off flan for this coin.

Dave, they're in the fuzzy caterpillar thing (uh, the wreath, that is) on the rev.

Very nice, Bob! I've always admired this series of coins despite my complete ignorance of both how to identify these pieces and much of the historical context of their production.

I need to update it and add more coins, but it does provide some context: https://www.coincommunity.com/pdf/A...-Elymais.pdf

Just got back, 3 weeks away......
Great coins Bob..I do like these Drachms...
The first one is interesting with the arrangement of dashes trying to say something, maybe an abstract portrait?
Nice pick up and look forward to seeing the others...Paul

Thanks, Paul. Regarding the reverse of #1, I don't think it's a degenerated representation of anything, but I can't be certain. Sometimes the reverse dashes on these issues are orderly, sometimes they are random. This example seems to be somewhere in between.

Nice additions Bob I only have 2 and they were both gifted to me. 1 of them has your name on it if you don't have an example yet, no point it sitting in a tray going unloved. Vant Haaff type 14.4 ( I think ) Phraates - ae drachm The Obverse is a little crusty but the Reverse is not bad at all, feel free to send me a PM if you don't mind receiving a gift

Nice little VH 14.4 there, Damion, with a very clear rendition of the diadem. PM on its way.
