Lorraine 1635 Teston, Duke Nicolas Francois, minted in Florence. An issue with very strange circumstances, similar to those mentioned by @joecoin in a 1642 post. In 1633, Duke Charles IV of Lorraine (whose earlier reign had peculiarities I will describe in about a week) was accused by Richielieu of conspiring with Gaston d'Orleans (who featured on coins in some of t360's posts in the early 1640s) against the French crown, and pressured to abdicate in favor of his younger brother, Nicolas Francois. Despite the abdication, the French invaded Lorraine in 1633. Nicolas Francois exiled to Florence, and apparently had little appetite for European politics during the 30 Years' War, as within a few years he abdicated his title ... back to Charles  . The French would continue to occupy Lorraine until 1661, at which point Charles was restored (I posted a coin of the restored Charles IV for 1665). An interesting historical note on Nicolas is that his great-grandson, Duke Francis III of Lorraine, married Maria Teresa of Austria in 1736, thereby founding the house of Hapsburg-Lorraine, so Nicolas is the male ancestor of all the rulers in that line, including the 18th and 19th century emperors of Austria. The only coins struck in Nicolas' name were testons dated 1634-37. NGC lists them under German States - Lorraine, but I think they are also in some Italian catalogs since they were struck in Florence.   Edited by tdziemia

Here is a 1/24 Thaler from the Polish City of Elbing dated AD 1634. You will see a couple more of this type from me in the upcoming week.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."
