Went to the Missouri Numismatic Society show today, conveniently located - as it is every year - just a few miles from home at the local convention center. Picked up a few coins, including the following. The coin has plenty of problems: scratches and gouges galore. (I initially thought the holes were pitting/porosity...I had forgotten to bring my loupe to the show...but with these photos I took at home I see they are gouges) However, those issues resulted in a nice discount from seller James Beach. And enough of the portrait holds up that I'm happy with the purchase - the coin does look pretty good in hand. At 30 mm, it's a decent size too. Thought I'd share it, warts and all. I already own a number of much nicer tets of this king, but there's always room for another. Orodes II c. 57-38 BC AR tetradrachm Sellwood 48.1 Edited by Kamnaskires 07/27/2018 08:33 am

Very nice looking coin. It is funny how something so old can be so beautiful.

Nice addition Bob!
One of the downfalls of living in Spain is its lack of coin shows, very few and far between, especially in my neck of the woods...Must be great to be able to handle and view the coins first hand....A real luxury...
Any hypothesis on the gouges? Gives the coin a lovely character...Paul

Nice coin! I think the reverse is rather interesting.
Palouche, when I lived in spain I had to take a 1.5 hour train ride to Seville for their two or three coin ships. lol I ended up going every couple months.
I have it much worse here in Japan. It is a couple hours via bullet train. :(

Thanks for the comments, all. Regarding the gouges, Paul: I suppose it's possible they are simply the impressions left by something the coin was up against while (presumably) buried. I don't think they are any kind of intentional defacement since they are not concentrated on the main devices.

Bob, great pick - I'm sure with your experience you did well - I've never been to a coin show, I live in Central Jersey and pretty close to NYC. I want to make sure the show deals mostly with ancients.

Thanks, guys. Quote: I want to make sure the show deals mostly with ancients. Yeah, that's always ideal for us, of course. Unfortunately the MNS show here in my neck of the woods only features about a half dozen ancients dealers - they are greatly outnumbered by those other guys, pushing their slick machine-produced stuff. I used to occasionally travel to the yearly Chicago International Coin Fair. That show no longer exists, but I think the Chicago Coin Expo is essentially its replacement. But, for me, with my very narrow collecting focus, there's always the question of whether it's worth a long drive (5 hours) to Chicago on the off chance I may find something I need for my collection. Back in my early collecting days (1990s) there was a small but really nice annual ancients-only show in Plymouth Meeting, PA, an easy drive from where I lived at the time. CNG was always part of the bourse since their Lancaster location wasn't so far away. That was a great annual show...I miss it. Thank goodness for the Internet.

Nice coin Bob. Despite its imperfections the portrait is still quite good and you can read most if not all of the lettering on the reverse. I just picked up a tet at a coin show last week (my second) which I will post as soon as I can get to working with my coins again - so busy!
