What happened to this 1929S penny. It looks like someone bit it. But I am thinking that it got stuck in the press and was hammered a couple of times.

I can tell you one thing. It's definitely not a Mint error. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). Someone took their frustration out on this poor cent. It was intentionally damaged. The metal has been pushed in from brutal force with some type of tool.

If you can see pushed in/pushed over metal or scratches, then it's been done after it left the U.S. Mint. Stuff like this can happen in circulation.

Note the disturbance on the rim. (pressed down. The coin may have been hit with something)
Note the dents on the surface of the coin. When the coin is dented inwards on the one side, it makes a bulge on the other side.
The curved line on the coin looks like the coin had hit with another coin.
When just one of these events happen, the coin is done as a collectable. They all them Cuds. Worth face value. If it were a valuable coin coin the value would drop 90% in value. Keep this in mind for coins you purchase. Pass when you see them. If you buy them, they are very hard to resell. (You have to find a new collector that know very little about coins) Pass... Buy it you might feel like Willie Cayote:

I was referring to going to a coin show, or buying a coin from off ebay. Pass on them when you see these sold.

Only experience will help you distinguish genuine errors from post-mint damage (along with common sense).
