This 1874-1974 Dollar commemorates the anniversary of the Capital city of Manitoba, Canada. The name Winnipeg is from the Cree, meaning, muddy waters.
In the image showing the large text of 100, each zero contains an image of the city. The left shows the main street in 1874 c/w oxen pulling a cart, and the right shows 1974 with skyscrapers and vehicles along the same road.

The Daniel Boone Birth Bicentennial half dollar is another classic-era US commemorative coin that features a place within its design; the coin was struck from 1934 through 1938. The "place" in question is Fort Boonesborough and it can be found on the coin's reverse; it is presented in the background and not very prominent, however, and can be hard to see.

If the left background of the coin's reverse is closely inspected, one of the corner blockhouses of Fort Boonesborough can be seen. Fort Boonesborough was a relatively small settlement in Kentucky that provided shelter for its inhabitants as they worked to settle the US' western frontier. It was comprised of a number of log cabins that faced an open courtyard. They were, over time, joined together via a log palisade that helped create a more secure, enclosed structure. The rectangular fort is believed to have enclosed an area of about 3/4 acres.

Though located at a strategically vulnerable spot that allowed the surrounding hills to be used to peer into the fort and spy on its internal activity, it proved to be a robust enough structure that was populated by a group of tough and stubborn frontiersmen/women who worked together to successfully defend the Fort against a nine-day siege by a mix of Shawnee, Wyandots, Cherokees, Delawares, Mingo and other Native Americans (the Shawnee were largest in number); they were all under the command of Chief Black Fish of the Shawnee. A group of approximately 40 French-Canadians also fought with the Native American tribes. After their siege proved unsuccessful, the Native American war parties retreated and left the Fort at peace.

A recreated/reconstructed Fort Boonesborough is currently a Kentucky State Park that offers a glimpse into the Fort's history as well being within a park that offers a variety of recreational activities - including camping,swimming, boating, hiking, etc.

New UK £5 coin showing the Royal Albert Hall in London, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year:


The actual Royal Albert Hall, photographed by me one summer evening:

Known to Londoners simply as "The Albert Hall", this magnificent circular concert hall is named after Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, who died in 1861. It forms part of the complex of museums and attractions in the Kensington area of London that were financed by the Great Exhibition of 1851, including the Science Museum, Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. The Hall is perhaps best known for the series of Classical concerts known as 'The Proms', which take place every summer evening and culminate with a riotous 'Last Night' when the audience typically dress up in colorful clothes and wave flags while the orchestra plays patriotic music. However, the Hall has also staged sports competitions, beauty contests and popular music concerts, so it is by no means just a place to listen to Classical music.
