The Place de la Bastille in Paris, taken by me from a bus, so a bit out-of-focus! This was the site of the medieval fortress that later became a notorious prison and was stormed and destroyed in the 1789 Revolution. The modern building behind the column is the new Paris Opera de la Bastille, which stands on the site of a former 19th-century train station.

The 1927 Battle of Bennington-Vermont Independence Sesquicentennial half dollar includes a symbolic place reference vs. actual depiction.

The catamount on the coin's reverse is a reference to the Catamount Tavern (often referred to as Fay's Tavern after its owner Stephen Fay, its original name was, formally, the Green Mountain Tavern), a place where Ethan Allen met with other members of the Green Mountain Boys to plan their resistance fight against the British and the New Yorkers attempting to claim Vermont's land. At the time of the American Revolution, a stuffed catamount was placed on a signpost outside of the tavern. The connection was created and has persisted through history.

Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, was commemorated on a three-coin US commemorative coin program issued on the 50th anniversary of its completion. The 1991 three-coin program consisted of a CuNi Clad Half Dollar, a Silver Dollar and a Gold Half Eagle.

The Memorial was designed and carved under the supervision of Gutzon Borglum. You might recall that Borlgum was the original designer/sculptor of the Stone Mountain Memorial in Georgia, but was fired by the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association that was sponsoring the carving over its slow progress and multiple financial disagreements. Borglum moved from the Stone Mountain project to the Mount Rushmore project.

Mount Rushmore was constructed between 1927 and 1941. Unfortunately, Gutzon Borglum died a few months before the Memorial was finished; the work was completed by his son Lincoln Borglum.

The sculptures of the Presidents are ~60 feet tall, with the width of the four portraits combined being ~205 feet.

Each of the coins in the program features an aerial view of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Monticello was the Virginia home of Thomas Jefferson, the Third President of the United States (at various times before, Jefferson served as the Second US Vice President (under John Adams), First US Secretary of State, Second US Minister to France (after Benjamin Franklin) and several positions within and representing Virginia). Monticello is located in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Jefferson designed Monticello himself (he also designed his Poplar Forest residence); it was subject to multiple redesigns/rebuilds that resulted it in being constructed, reconstructed and expanded over a period of 40 years (1769-1809).

The reverse of the Thomas Jefferson 250th Anniversary of Birth commemorative silver dollar features a view of the front of Monticello (with the leftmost portion out of view).

For more details on this coin, including why it was struck in 1994 though the true 250th anniversary of Jefferson's birth occurred in 1993, see:

Place: Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima (a Japanese volcanic island south of the Japanese mainland; during World War II)

Coin: 2005 US Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollar

Post-Your-Coins-Depicting-Places! Post-Your-Coins-Depicting-Places!

The top of Mount Suribachi is the highest point on the volcanic island, reaching a height of 554 feet.

I visited the United States Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima Flag Raising statue) in Washington, DC years ago during a night tour of the capital. It was a very impressive sight!

For more details about the coin and photograph, I suggest:

From the series of circulating German 2-euro commemoratives featuring different regions of Germany, a 2017 €2 coin for the Rhineland region with a picture of the Porta Nigra in Trier:

Trier on the River Moselle is a big center for the wine industry and is also said to be the oldest town in Germany. It is famous for its numerous Roman remains, which include the Porta Nigra, one of the largest and best-preserved city gateways to have survived from Roman times. Here is my photo of it, scanned from a slide taken in 1987:
