In 1992, the US Mint struck a Silver Dollar to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the White House (formally: the Executive Mansion of the US President). The laying of the cornerstone of the White House took place in 1792 in a ceremony led by George Washington. John Adams, the second US President, moved into the White House in 1800 and was the first president to call it home; his wife, Abigail, moved in with him. George Washington, the first US President, never lived in the Mansion as it was under construction during his terms in office. The White House was designed by Irish-American architect James Hoban; he was selected by President George Washington. The coin's obverse was designed by Edgar Z. Steever, IV, its reverse by Chester Y. Martin. The North Portico of the White House is presented on the obverse of the coin, with the reverse depicting James Hoban, the first architect of the White House, along with the Hoban-designed Main Entrance to the Mansion. Here's a coin depicting a place - Mount Vernon, the Virginia home of US President George Washington. 1982 George Washington Half Dollar The coin presents noted equestrian George Washington on its obverse and a depiction of his Mount Vernon home on its reverse. The coin was designed/modeled by US Mint Chief Sculptor-Engraver Elizabeth Jones, an outstanding artist and the creator of several noteworthy designs within the modern US commemorative series (IMO, her design of Nike, the goddess of Victory, for the obverse of the 1988 Olympic Games gold quarter eagle is of particular note). View of Washington's Mount Vernon Home (Image Credit: Image courtesy of Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs division. https://www.loc.gov Public Domain.)I visited Mount Vernon in my youth, but would like to go back as an adult with a better context for the experience. I've been told by a friend who visited a few years back that quite a bit of focus at the site has been shifted away from Washington and on to the issue of the enslaved individuals who worked at the plantation. While obviously in need of their story being told, I don't think they should overshadow one of the central figures in US history. Maybe other recent visitors of Mount Vernon can chime in. Here's a coin that presents the ruins of the church tower constructed at Jamestown. The coin's reverse depicts the church tower that was constructed circa 1680 near the original James Fort settlement site. It was part of a chruch built to replace an earlier church that was located within the Fort - its construction was long after the James Fort had fallen out of primary use and the settlement had expanded into the surrounding area. Contrary to what is indicated on the US Mint web site about the coin, the Tower it is not part of the original Jamestown settlement (circa 1607). The design is the work of United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble. Another from the modern US commemorative coin series - 1995 Civil War Battlefields Silver Dollar. 1995 US Civil War Battlefields Commemorative Silver Dollar The coin's reverse, by John Mercanti, features the memorial "castle" built to honor and remember the deeds of New York's 12th and 44th Regiment Companies during the Battle of Gettysburg during the US Civil War. It is the largest regimental memorial on the Gettysburg battlefield. New York 44th and 12th Castle Memorial on Little Round Top, Gettysburg Battlefield (Image Credit: Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.
