I found this in a roll today. Can anyone tell me what happened? This coin is as smooth as a baby's butt where the Monticello should be. I am clueless about this one. Thanks for any useful information

It was caught in a rotating machine of some sort. Most say a " Dryer Coin", which it can if caught in the baffle portion not the rotating drum.

@Brice0113, I agree with @crazyb0 that this is just PMD (certainly could be from a dryer) and does not add to the value of the coin.

Definitely damaged after the mint.

But... I have a question about it being a Dryer Coin.

For years my (coin collecting) grandfather had laundromats, and I have a lot of Dryer Coins from this (see my thread http://goccf.com/t/143863). I do not have any recollection or samples of this type of damage.

Do we know for sure this is a type of Dryer Coin damage also?

It's a heavily damaged and beat up coin. It's post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint). It's only worth five cents.
