Hi everyone, I'm new to collecting and this is actually my first post on here. But I was going through some coins I had laying around and found this one that seems to have a distinct circle on the back of it. You can't really see it in the pictures but the circle is much smoother than the rest of the coin and after taking pictures it even looks as if it might be recessed because of the way it reflects the light. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that or if it may be an error, I'd love to hear what yall think about it!

To CCF! Maybe Progressive Indirect Design Transfer, caused by Die Deterioration (die wear). The outline of the design gets transferred onto one die to the other. http://www.error-ref.com/progressiv...gn-transfer/

I'm not sure if it classifies as PIDT, but it is definitely due to die wear (erosion).

Here's a great educational post on Die Deterioration (die wear), if you want to learn more about it. http://goccf.com/t/317950

The devices on the outer rind are raised on the die. When the fields are polished, the devices for this area is also polished down. When that happens the devices loose their depth and shape. Keep in mind also that 70% of these quarters have MD on that same area. Little or a lot, they do not true doubled dies. On this series the doubled dies are seen only in the center part of the design. There is one exception on the obverses for the Michigan quarters.

All the rest of the ATB so far is just should hub doubling on the ears. Why is this one different? Because they have not hubbed this just once time. (like it would normally be done)
Not only is the an exception to the rule for ATB Quarters, it is also an exception to the rule also on the mint mark.

It also enters the rank of being the second RPM looking doubled die because of the hub doubling on the mint mark.
Something new all the time. So stay tuned. Your new find might be another exception to the rules.
