Here's an 1863 cent that's counterstamped J.W. Strange. Note the combination of upper/lower case letters. both Brunk (# S-1064) and Rulau (# ME-BA-24) listed these "Strange" counterstamps. At least five examples of the J.W. Strange counterstamps have been reported.

J.W. was not only a skilled machinist, he was a prolific inventor. In pursuit of the American dream, he passed along his skills to two sons, Clarence A. and Frederic R. who also counterstamped some coins as a means of advertising. They were primarily located in Bangor, Maine.

Here are notes from my database:

JOSEPH WEAVER STRANGE APPEARED IN AN 1852 BUSINESS DIRECTORY, OBSERVED BRUNK. (HE IS FURTHER LISTED AS SUCH IN THE 1856 MAINE REGISTER.) HE WAS A DIE SINKER (1850 DIRECTORY AT COLUMBIA) AND LETTER CUTTER WHO REPORTEDLY PRODUCED METAL STAMPS, INCLUDING THOSE FOR HIS SON, C.A. HE WAS ALSO A BRASS FOUNDER AND STENCIL CUTTER WHOSE OWN STAMP IS KNOWN IN DIFFERENT SIZES. ON 9-29-1852, HE EXHIBITED AT THE MAINE STATE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY IN BANGOR, A MOULD AND SPECIMENS OF CASTS IN BRITANNIA, SAMPLES OF STEEL LETTER CUTTINGS, STENCILS AND SAMPLES OF EMBOSSED CARDS. IN 1861, J.W. ADVERTISED HIMSELF AS A STEEL LETTER CUTTER. SINKER AND MAKER OF PATENT MODELS & C. ON 8-13-1867, HE WAS GRANTED PATENT # 67,682 FOR AN IMPROVED, INSERTIBLE SAW-TOOTH; ALONG WITH E. STRANGE. IN THE 1859 JOURNAL OF THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE, Vol. 68, J.W. IS RECORDED AS HAVING DISPLAYED AN IMPROVED WEIGHING SCALE. IN 1872, HE PATENTED A STEERING APPARATUS AND A TENSION MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINE SHUTTLES. THE SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN NOTES THAT HE WAS GRANTED PATENT #30,009 FOR AN IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING DIVIDERS, DURING THE WEEK OF SEPT. 11, 1860. A COMMISSIONER OF PATENTS REPORT NOTES THAT J.W. WAS GRANTED PATENT #76,113 FOR A THREAD & TWINE CUTTER ON 3-31-1868. IN 1874, HE WAS GRANTED PATENT #156,444 FOR AN IMPROVED CHURN. ON 9-22-1857, HE AND SAMUEL DARLING WERE GRANTED PATENT #18,265 FOR AN IMPROVED PENCIL SHARPENER. ON MAY 8, 1860, HE WAS GRANTED PATENT #28,213 FOR AN IMPROVED, SELF-FASTENING DRESS HOOK. (SEE DIRECTORY of AMERICAN TOOL MAKERS)

My pleasure, CoinFrog.

I value the "living history" that counterstamped coins convey. They tell us who once held them and, for those willing to pursue a mystery, often so much more about the makers and their times in young America.

That 64 is really attractive, and the dig find has its own appeal as well.

Thanks Frog :) I like the patina on the dug coin -- you can tell it was XF-AU when it ended up getting buried. The PCGS 64 is really nice in hand, I picked it in particular because I thought it was choice for the grade, in addition to being a scarcer variety.

Here's a counterstamped 1864; CONN. CUTLERY CO. / NAUGATUCK. While not as pretty as Paralyse's coin, it does have something to say ...

My database notes: THE CONNECTICUT CUTLERY COMPANY WAS ORGANIZED BY GEORGE A. LEWIS, HOMER TWITCHELL JOHN H. WHITTLEMORE AND OTHERS IN THE IRON INDUSTRY. IT OPERATED FROM 1867-1883. HOWEVER, SEVERAL PLANTS HAD SPRUNG UP DURING THE CIVIL WAR WHEN TWITCHELL INVENTED A POCKET KNIFE IN 1864. THEY ALSO PRODUCED SHEARS AND MADE TOOLS FOR MACHINISTS. GOINS (directory of American cutlers) LISTS THIS CUTLERY COMPANY. THIS MARK WAS USED ON THEIR PRODUCTS.

Thanks, jbuck. A great many cutlers counterstamped coins, from the early 1800's on ... The Goins' book is a great one for researching cutler marks.
