Very unusual (and nice!) to see a "deep dive" like this on one year.

I have some British India coins from the 1940s that date to my dad's service in WWII. I noticed that a couple of the cupronickel coins have brownish streaking on them as can also be seen on the reverse of your coins 5 and 8, and the obverse of coin 6. I am assuming this is a flaw in the underlying metal. Any ideas?

Yes as far as I know its called woodgrain and is quite a common occurrence in the cupronickel coins of India. It is an error in the mixing of the metals used.

As per the title of the thread here is the extra...
I have always had a soft spot for the portrait coins of the princely states, Here are two coins that were also minted in 1940 in Bahawalpur....
Bahawalpur was a Princely State of British India and later Pakistan from 1802-1955. After the independance of India in 1947 Bahawalpur remained an autonomous state until 1955 when it merged with Western Pakistan....
After the death of his father Mohammad Bahawal Khan V in 1907, Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan V Abbasi became Nawab of Bahawalpur at the ripe old age of three.Until 1924 the state was governed on his behalf by the then president Sir Rahim Bakhsh. Muhammad Khan V became an officer in the British army fighting in the third Afghan war and also commanded forces in the Middle East during the Second World War...He died in London at the age of 61 in 1966..

When I was young, I also enjoyed collecting coins from the princely states. Maybe these won't come up if you are strictly staying on 1940, but if I recall correctly, Gwalior and Jaipur also have portrait coins in the 1940s (I used to have the Bahawalpur 1/4 anna. Your half pice is really in super condition!)

Thanks tdziemia!
The 1/2 Pice is a lot better in hand with full lustre ...Alas photography is not my forte!

At the end of each series I plan to show some Princely state coins, these wont be related to the series date... Gwalior is one of my favourites and probaly the next up...

The next set up will be 1862 and as you probably know a minefield of variants and hopefully a few more questions...Paul

The next set I will be showing is Queen Victoria 1862...

After the Indian mutiny of 1857 the government of India was transferred from the East India Company to the crown and in 1877 Victoria became Empress of India...
The first coins minted under the Crown were in 1862 and this series is a minefield of variations!

First up is the lowest denomination the 1/12 Anna, Copper, depending on mint 2.10-2.17g..and 17.40/18.00mm dia..Edga Plain..

William Wyon was official chief engraver at The Royal Mint from 1828 until his death in 1851..

British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

In 1862 there were three mints running,
NOTE..The 1862 date was used without changing for 11 years so the next dated 1/12 Anna coin is 1874..
Mumbai (Bombay)..Minted 1/12 Anna coins from 1862-1889,
Kolkata (Calcutta)..Minted 1/12 Anna coins from 1862-1901
Chennai (Madras)...Minted 1/12 Anna coins only for the 11 year run of the 1862 dated coin.

There were two types of bust used from 1862-1876 using the legend QUEEN VICTORIA...In 1877 the legend changed to EMPRESS VICTORIA.

Bust A..Front of dress has 4 1/3 Jabots(panels) with a flower at the centre of the bottom panel.
Bust B..Front of dress has 4 Jabots (panels) with a flower to the right of the bottom panel.
Reverse - the same reverse design was used for the entire series.
British-Colonial-Coinage-And-Some-Extras

In 1862 all three mints used Bust A only...
The only distinguishing factor between the three mints is their diametre..
Kolkata..17.40/17.50 dia...Mintage 2,501,952
Mumbai...17.90/18.00mm dia..Mintage 2,999,380
Chennai..17.60/17.70 dia..Mintage 40,487,040

Note...Because of this factor its very difficult to know which coin your buying, especially on ebay, if the seller has not specified the exact diametre or KM reference, and even then they get it wrong! I had luck as my coin is from Mumbai,a much lower mintage.

Coin Vic 1...Bust A..Mumbai Mint...KM-465...17.95mm dia..2,999,380

Thanks jbuck and scopru!
Doesn't seem to be much interest in this thread will let it run a few more posts and see what happens.....Anyhow...

Next denomination is the 1/2 Pice (1/128 Indian Rupee)

This is an easy coin to attribute and collect, with no referenced variations...

Only Minted in 1862 with legend VICTORIA QUEEN.
The next 1/2 Pice minted was in 1885 with VICTORIA EMPRESS.

Only minted in 1862 at two mints and the only distinguishing factor is the diametre and this is slight....

Kolkata (Calcutta)..KM-466.21.2/21.25mm....96,843,000..Edge Plain.
Chennai (Madras)..KM-466...21.4mm...........6,400,000..Edge Plain.

Coin Vic 2...Kolkata (Calcutta)..KM-466.21.2/21.25mm
A nicely detailed coin..

Let me say that I am greatly interested in this thread; I simply haven't had anything to say. Please continue your presentation.

I do have some 1940 British Indian silver. I do not know if it would be appropriate to add to the thread.
