Quote: Interesting about the CAC sticker. From these images, looks like maybe an old cleaning. But it could look quite different in hand, as it's difficult to grade from pictures. Bad GC pictures. Would bet that it looks a lot better in hand when you can see what it really looks like

I'm surprised it didn't go MS-61/62.

Mike, I'm very curious about coins such as this and your opinion on why you think it's 100% original. Please understand, it looks like a great coin and, personally, I would love to own this piece myself. However, I have a very hard time believing this is at all an original skin.
For an AU55, I believe (just off the top of my head) there needs to be about 75% of the luster remaining. Your photos don't show that, but I'll assume it's there. Under most normal circumstances (unless in the middle of a roll or something similar where oxygen couldn't get at the surfaces), the lustrous areas would assume sort of degree of toning. This coin is basically white with some toning around the devices which is would seem to indicate that some sort of cleaning was applied (maybe just a light dip). I get that this coin is market acceptable and again, one I would proudly own myself.
How else might a 150 year old silver coin (that's never seen a roll) be essentially untoned?

I will never fully know, I didn't win it. I bid on this one but the eye appeal wasn't drool-worthy enough for me to chase it. As Baseball alluded to, with Great Collection pictures, you are kind of taking a gamble with lighter toned coins. Lighter toned coins tend to become bleached out in GC picture which hides luster and toning. You have to understand this when bidding on their coins and imagine what the coin will look like based on your previous purchases from them. Essentially, you are trusting that CAC got it right and that the coin will look better inhand. I've purchased many coins from them and I feel I have good command over what their coins will look like inhand versus what they look like in GC's photos. So basically what I do is try to imagine the coin a few shades darker than it appears in their photos. I purchased this gorgeous CAC approved 1840 sld from them back in April. I like to use this one as an example. The first 2 are GC pics, the last two are mine and represent a more accurate depiction of what the coin looks like inhand:

To get an idea what this 1868 LSD looks like just go to PCGS coin facts. There are two photographs of this coin as it was resubmitted at least once seeking a higher grade. The coin sold for $2200+. A non CAC 1868 PCGS 55 sold earlier in the year for $1200+ via GC. IMO this coin was worth every bit.

Everest please post a link to both views of the coin. Are you talking about auction history? Because PCGS coinfacts is basically a defunct website. So please enlighten us with what you are referring to with links. This is all I get when I visit that site: http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Hierar...eated+Dollar

Mike: Your link works for me. I can follow it to a page with photos of a few high grade 1868 LSD's. On this page you can access an area that will allow you to view other PCGS graded 1868 dollars.

I found the auction records on PCGS CoinFacts but I don't see this one listed?

I know the link works but where do you go to view 1868 Seated dollars from this page. If you post 2 links to both of the two different picture sets of this 1868 I can work backwords and figure out how you found their pages. Please just post the links to them.

If you don't know how to post links, all you have to do is go to the picture set in coinfacts and click on the web address that appears in your browser's address box(top upper left of your screen). The address will become highlighted. Right click on that box and a drop down menu will appear. Select 'copy'. The go to the reply window of this thread, touch the curser to the page then right click. Another drop down menu will appear and select 'paste'. The link will appear on the page and hit submit reply.

Thanks BH1964.
Looks like the coin was cracked out and resubmitted. There are two different pictures. Personally I like the look of the coin in the second of the two pictures. Looks darker and imho has better eye appeal. Wonder how it looks in hand. It goes to show how different pictures can make such a difference. In my opinion in the GC pics it has more of a cleaned look than the PCGS pics.
