maybe a lamination?

or it could just be beat to heck

I'm thinking that this is a delamination error, since it has that peeled, flaky, and rough appearance that a Lamination would have.

I'm thinking lamination also.
If something hit it that hard to damage the lettering,
it would have also damaged the rim.
