I snapped this one up as soon as it was listed on ebay... not an overly expensive error, but one of these has eluded me for a very long time. I love it...

Sorry for the intrusion from south of the border. @spp, could you please explain to me how a non-circular flan is created? Aren't they all the same (circular) shape? Or is the result of shenanigans?

I suspect that a incomplete punched blank like this:

...got separated into two pieces either prior to, or in, the upset mill (rimming phase to turn a blank into a planchet). The smaller fragment probably created a strike-through error somewhere and the larger piece is the elliptical planchet.

Ok thanks for that explanation @SPP. I'm thinking that the weight on your piece necessarily must be less than for a cent with an entire flan. Very interesting!
