A few excerpts from the Public law: Quote:The coins will be curved, much like the Baseball HOF commeoratives. Like the BBHoF commems, all coins will have a common obverse and reverse. The law allows the following mintage: 50,000 90% $5 gold coins (proof and uncirc) 400,000 90% $1 silver coins (proof and uncirc) 750,000 50¢ clad coins (proof and uncirc) 100,000 .999 $1 silver 5ozt pucks (in proof only) Quote:
(d) CONVEX SHAPE.— (1) IN GENERAL.—The coins minted under this Act shall
be produced in a fashion similar to the 2014 National Baseball
Hall of Fame 75th Anniversary Commemorative Coin, so that
the reverse of the coin is convex to more closely resemble
the visor of the astronaut's helmet of the time and the obverse
concave, providing a more dramatic display of the obverse
design chosen pursuant to section 4(c).
(2) SENSE OF CONGRESS.—It is the sense of Congress that,
to the extent possible without significantly adding to the purchase
price of the coins, the coins minted under this Act should
be produced with the design of the reverse of the coins continuing
over what would otherwise be the edge of the coins,
such that the reverse design extends all the way to the obverse
design. Quote:
SEC. 7. SURCHARGES.
(a) IN GENERAL.—All sales of coins minted under this Act
shall include a surcharge as follows: (1) A surcharge of $35 per coin for the $5 coin.
(2) A surcharge of $10 per coin for the $1 coin described
under section 3(a)(2).
(3) A surcharge of $5 per coin for the half-dollar coin.
(4) A surcharge of $50 per coin for the $1 coin described

Is there a pic of the obverse and reverse design?
Also, what is the surcharge going to?

for costs related to the preservation, maintenance, and enhancement
of the Astronauts Memorial and for promotion of space
exploration through educational initiatives; and
(3) one quarter to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation,
to aid its missions of promoting the importance of science
and technology to the general public and of aiding the United States in retaining its world leadership in science and technology
by providing college scholarships for the very best and
brightest students pursuing degrees in science, technology,

That's a really cool design. Hope the actual coin turns out just as nice.
Muddler- are you referring to having a different design for each denomination?

Might be a tough sell for a curved puck for $40 an ounce. I will be surprised if they sell out.

I agree BUT how can you NOT buy a CURVED PROOF puck?  Definitely not an "all in" coin but there is no way I won't get one.... |

I didn't say I wasn't going to buy one. Just think will be difficult to sell 100K of them at that price. Going have to come up with a different name than puck though since it is curved. I think we will have to call it the 5 oz. silver flying "saucer". So put me down for an Apollo flying "saucer" in Jan. Flying saucer has a nice ring to it keeping with the space theme. Maybe the name will catch on?

I will probably pass on the gold and the puck, but the $1 coin and half dollar would be a nice addition.  |

I'm looking forward to seeing the 5 oz proof. Not a huge fan of the vapor blast. I have said from the start that I wish they would look like the silver proof quarter sets, the designs pop off the coin, but they are harder to see on a small quarter. They would really pop on a proof puck. I would love to see them switch all of the pucks over to proofs for the remainder of the series. The Apollo saucer will definitely be unique.

I wonder how challenging it will be and what sort of errors we will have.  |

The Mint may just do a normal edge finish instead of trying this wrapped design finish. So far, I haven't seen anything published about which way the Mint is going on this. |
